A Puddle on the Checkered Floor
An elderly man dragged the bristles of a wide push broom across a puddle of dark coffee on the black-and-white tiled floor.
His shoulders curled forward under faded denim overalls as he worked against the wet stain near the diner’s front doors.
A younger man in a sharp navy suit stood beside him, clutching a paper takeout cup and watching the slow sweeps of the broom.
The suited man tilted his cup, deliberately splashing the remaining liquid across the clean tiles, directly into the path of the broom.
He laughed, pointing at the fresh mess before adjusting his lapel and stepping back to admire his handiwork.
Stepping Into the Mess
A waitress in a blue dress and white apron sprinted across the dining area with a thick stack of paper towels.
She dropped straight to the wet tiles, pressing the white napkins into the puddle with both palms to soak up the dark liquid.
Looking up at the older worker, she gently took the wooden broom handle from his hands and guided him backward toward a booth.
She wiped the floor until the gloss returned to the black and white squares, then stood up and smoothed her apron.
The three of them gathered near the front glass windows under the harsh afternoon sunlight.
Unzipping the Disguise
The elderly worker looked between the suited manager and the young woman who had cleaned the floor in his place.
He reached up to his chest, grasped the metal zipper of his grease-stained overalls, and pulled it down in one steady pull.
He slid the straps off his shoulders and stepped out of the heavy blue denim, letting the work clothes drop onto the checkered floor.
Beneath the rough fabric, he wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit, a crisp white shirt, and a dark silk tie.
The manager’s smile vanished as his eyes darted from the tailored lapels to the older man’s upright posture.
A Transfer of Power
The older man stepped forward, closing the distance between himself and the manager.
He reached out, unclipped the plastic name badge from the manager’s breast pocket, and turned toward the waitress.
With deliberate care, he fastened the leadership badge onto the collar of her white apron.
The suited manager collapsed to both knees on the polished tiles, pressing his palms together in front of his chest and pleading upward.
