A Sudden Pull On The Lead
The Belgian Malinois dropped his chest low to the paving stones and lunged forward against the black nylon leash.
His front paws scrambled across the gray rock, nose tracking directly toward an abandoned maroon backpack leaning against a low stone bench.
His handler tightened her grip with both hands, leaning her weight back on her heels to absorb the sudden momentum of the working dog.
The dog pushed his snout firmly against the outer fabric of the pack, inhaled deeply through flared nostrils, and snapped his body around.
He dropped immediately into a rigid sit on the stone terrace, ears pinned straight up and eyes locked squarely on the backpack’s zipper seam.
“Good boy, watch it,” the officer said in a low, measured voice, keeping the tension steady on the lead.
Clearing The Stone Terrace
Behind them, a line of hikers dressed in sun hats and lightweight jackets stopped mid-stride, lowering their walking sticks to the ground.
The officer turned her head, raising her left palm flat toward the group to halt their forward approach.
“All right, let’s keep moving back, please,” she instructed, extending her arm outward to direct the crowd away from the bench.
The visitors stepped backward across the stone terrace, their rubber soles scraping against the slate flags as they cleared the perimeter.
Reaching to her collar, the officer unclipped the handheld radio, brought the speaker to her lips, and pressed down on the side button.
“Dispatch, this is unit four. The area is secured,” she announced clearly into the receiver.
She extended portable black safety stanchions with linked belts across the plaza, isolating the pack while the dog remained frozen in position beside her boot.
The Inspection Team Steps In
Two technicians dressed in gray tactical workwear emerged from the mountain building, carrying a reinforced protective hard case between them.
They approached the cordoned area with deliberate steps, setting the equipment case onto the flagstones beside the stone bench.
One technician lowered himself into a crouch, pulling a handheld sensor wand from the case and extending the detection probe forward.
He swept the black sensor head inches above the top handle, down along the side mesh pockets, and across the bottom base of the maroon bag.
His partner leaned in close, monitoring the digital display screen as the device gathered readings along the fabric seams.
After a thorough sweep of every compartment, the technician powered down the wand, clicked it back into its molded foam insert, and snapped the exterior clasps shut.
Applauding The K-9 Team
The technician straightened up and turned toward the officer, nodding with a clear thumbs-up gesture.
The officer bent her knees and dropped down to eye level with the Malinois, releasing the tight grip on the lead.
She placed both hands firmly on either side of the dog’s neck, massaging the thick fur beneath his harness with broad strokes.
The dog opened his jaws, letting his pink tongue drape over the side as his tail beat a rapid rhythm against the flagstones.
Behind the safety line, the hikers and technicians stood side by side, bringing their hands together in rhythmic applause against the mountain peaks.
