Accusation on the Sidewalk
A businessman jabbed his index finger toward an elderly man’s chest on the brick sidewalk. He demanded his money back, shouting that the man had stolen his white envelope.
The elderly man held the envelope tightly in his weathered hands. He tried to explain that it had simply fallen to the pavement.
A Bystander Steps In
A stranger carrying a coffee cup walked over and stepped between the two men. He looked down at the brick ground and pointed at a tiny paperclip lying near a receipt.
He explained that the clip fell off the envelope when it hit the ground. This proved the elderly man had retrieved it from the street rather than taking it from anyone’s pocket.
The Missing Bill
The businessman took back the cash and counted the bills against his vehicle. He announced that one hundred dollars was missing from the stack.
The bystander and the elderly man dropped down near the car tire. The elderly man reached beneath the bumper and pulled out a single folded bill, handing it over immediately.
An Overdue Apology
The bystander pointed out that the elderly man had left his own belongings behind just to chase down the owner. Across the street, the public bus pulled away from the curb, leaving the man behind.
The businessman took a breath, admitted his mistake, and offered to drive the man to his interview. The businessman opened his car door and gestured toward the passenger seat.
