An Argument In First Class
A flight attendant leaned forward, thrusting her index finger toward the older man seated by the aisle.
Her eyebrows pressed together as her voice echoed down the pressurized cabin. She demanded that he vacate the wide leather chair immediately.
The man rested both hands on his lap, his shoulders squared against the seat cushion. He wore a weathered brown leather jacket, worn soft along the seams, over an unbuttoned collared shirt.
He tilted his head slightly upward and spoke in a low, measured tone. He stated that the chair was assigned to him on his ticket.
A Refusal To Listen
The attendant shook her head sharply, her mouth tightening into a thin line. She pointed toward the aisle once again, raising her volume so passengers in surrounding rows turned to watch.
She told him he was delaying the entire aircraft and instructed him to stand up. Her finger remained inches from his nose as other travelers shifted uncomfortably in their seats.
The man reached slowly into the chest pocket of his jacket. He withdrew a folded paper boarding pass and extended it outward between two fingers.
He suggested that she inspect the printed name before raising her voice any further. The attendant snatched the paper from his hand without unfolding it or glancing at the ink.
She turned on her heel and shouted down the narrow walkway toward the galley, demanding immediate security assistance.
The Captain Steps Into The Aisle
The cockpit door clicked open, and a gray-haired captain with four gold stripes across his epaulets pushed past the curtain.
The flight attendant pointed an accusing finger back toward the seated passenger, explaining that the man refused to cooperate or move.
The captain’s jaw dropped slightly before his eyes widened. He stepped between the flight attendant and the passenger, his chest rising and falling quickly.
He turned his gaze directly toward the flight attendant and spoke firmly. He told her that the man seated before them was the founder of the entire airline.
The color drained from the woman’s cheeks as she looked down at the boarding pass still gripped in her fingers. Her shoulders slumped forward as she struggled to form words.
The captain shook his head, reprimanding her for the public scene she had created in front of the cabin. She stammered that she had not recognized his identity.
The founder looked directly into her eyes, his expression calm and unyielding. He rested his hands back on the armrests, his gray beard catching the overhead light as the captain stood silently in the aisle beside him.
