A Quiet Glance on the Train
A young man leaned over his seat cushion, his gaze locked onto the glowing phone screen held by the passenger beside him.
He did not look away as the screen shifted between menus and applications. He watched every tap and swipe from just a few inches distance, completely absorbed in the display.
The older man paused his thumbs mid-scroll. He turned his neck slowly, bringing his head around to look directly into the eyes of the teenager sitting next to him.
“Don’t you have your own phone?” the older man asked, pulling the device back closer to his sweater.
The teenager immediately pulled his shoulders back. He shifted his weight away from the aisle and lowered his jaw toward his green hoodie.
Unspoken Stories
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you,” the teenager murmured, keeping his eyes fixed on the fabric of his sleeves.
He swallowed hard before continuing softly. “My family can’t afford one.”
The older man stared at the boy’s downcast profile. His thumb remained motionless on the glass screen as the train carriage swayed along the tracks.
A memory surfaced behind the man’s eyes. Weeks prior, he had stood on a bright front porch holding a sleek, unboxed smartphone along with its original packaging.
He had stood outside the entryway, a wide smile across his face as he held out the new device toward a woman standing at the doorway.
The Weight of the Past
“He is gonna love this,” the man had said warmly, lifting the phone up so she could see it clearly.
He had stepped closer, holding out the gift. “At least give him this.”
The woman had shaken her head, her eyes rimmed with red. “I can’t,” she had whispered, taking a step backward into the dark interior of the house.
She pulled the door handle shut, letting the latch click firmly into place. The man had stood alone on the porch, looking down at the screen in his hand.
He had never been able to hand that present over to his son.
A Surprising Gift
The memory cleared as the train clicked along the rails. The man looked back down at the teenager sitting next to him in the hoodie.
He lifted his wrist and extended his arm across the narrow space between their seats, reaching toward the boy.
“Here, take it,” the man said, lifting the phone toward the young passenger.
The boy stared at the device, his eyes widening. He pulled his hands back toward his lap, shaking his head. “What? I can’t.”
A New Connection
The man held the phone steady, maintaining his position without moving his arm back.
“It was meant for a kid anyway,” the man said softly, resting his elbow comfortably against his leg.
The teenager slowly reached out his right hand. His fingers curled gently around the polished casing of the smartphone.
He pulled the phone toward his chest, holding it with both hands as his eyes filled with moisture.
“Thank you,” the teenager whispered, looking up with a gentle smile.
The older man leaned back into his blue fabric seat cushion, turning his face toward the window as a calm smile spread across his face.
