An Elderly Man On The Street Asks Passersby To Acknowledge Him

Overlooked on the Crowded Pavement

An elderly man with a silver beard pulled his worn brown jacket tight against his chest as he leaned back against a cold brick wall.

His boots stretched out across the hard concrete sidewalk, resting at the edge of a thin blanket folded underneath him.

Around him, the morning rush was in full swing along the city block.

Men and women dressed in tailored dark suits, crisp white collared shirts, and polished leather shoes marched past in quick strides.

Their eyes remained locked onto glowing smartphone screens held firmly in their palms.

Paper shopping bags swung from fingers, and headphones blocked out the sound of traffic idling at the curb.

Holding onto a Paper Cup

The man cradled a faded paper coffee cup between both hands, resting his forearms across his knees.

He lifted his chin slowly, watching the stream of passersby move around his seated frame like water around a stone.

Not a single person lowered their gaze or paused their stride.

A young man in a gray sweatshirt stepped over the edge of the blanket without glancing down, his thumb tapping rapidly against his mobile display.

A woman carrying a black shoulder bag brushed past the brickwork just inches from the man’s shoulder, her attention fixed entirely ahead.

The old man lowered his head briefly, staring down at the cardboard cup held tight in his palms.

Reaching Out to the Moving Crowd

His fingers tightened around the paper surface as he slowly tilted his head back up toward the line of commuters.

Lines creased the corners of his eyes and forehead as he shifted his weight against the graffiti-marked brick wall.

He did not call out loudly or wave his arms frantically.

Instead, he loosened his right hand from the paper cup and lifted it into the space between himself and the sidewalk path.

He unfolded his fingers, turning his open palm upward toward the people walking past.

His arm extended forward slowly, holding the open posture steady as footsteps continued to click against the pavement around him.

Looking Straight Ahead

The man rested his left arm across his lap, continuing to secure the white coffee cup while keeping his right hand outstretched.

His dark eyes locked straight onto the camera lens, looking directly into the frame while commuters moved behind his shoulders.

A slight smile softened the corners of his mouth beneath his white mustache and beard.

His open palm remained held out toward the viewer as a young man in a suit passed behind him without turning his head.

The video ends on a close shot of the man holding his right hand open toward the screen while seated beside his folded blanket on the sidewalk.
