A Shivering Stranger on the Concrete
An elderly man gripped the frayed edges of a worn blanket and pulled it tight against his chest while visible vapor rose from his lips.
He sat crouched low on the hard sidewalk, resting his back against the cold metal shutters of a closed storefront.
His hands, calloused and weathered by time, clutched the thin fabric, trying to block out the bitter wind sweeping through the empty street.
A passerby walking down the pavement slowed his steps as he approached the tucked figure.
The young man stopped completely, standing a few feet away on the cold sidewalk.
He looked down at the shivering figure, his forehead furrowing as he observed the thin layer of cloth offering almost no defense against the dropping temperature.
Unbuttoning the Warmth
The elderly man looked up slowly, raising his chin to meet the stranger’s eyes.
He offered a gentle shake of his head, his lower lip quivering slightly as he spoke to reassure the passerby that he was okay.
His fingers tightened around the worn edges of his sweater, which was visible beneath the blanket and marked with several small holes.
Despite his own condition, the old man gestured with a slight wave of his hand, attempting to turn away any concern.
The young man did not walk away.
Instead, he reached up to the collar of his own heavy overcoat, his fingers moving to the top button.
He unfastened each button slowly, undoing the heavy insulation that kept the winter chill off his own shoulders.
He shrugged his shoulders back, pulling his arms straight out of the sleeves and holding the heavy garment in front of him.
A Gift Against the Cold
Seeing the gesture, the old man opened his mouth to protest, his hand raising slightly to ward off the offering.
He pointed toward the young man’s now exposed sweater, shaking his head against leaving someone else out in the cold street.
The young man stepped forward, closing the space between them on the concrete step.
He draped the heavy brown coat directly around the old man’s shoulders, wrapping the thick panels carefully over his arms.
He reached down to pull the collar close around the old man’s throat, adjusting the lapels so they overlapped securely over his ragged clothes.
The older man lowered his chin, bringing his hands up to press against the thick, warm lining of the jacket.
His fingers dug into the heavy fabric, feeling the residual warmth stored inside the material.
Warmth in the Falling Snow
The young man stood tall in just his grey sweater, placing a hand gently on the elder’s shoulder for a brief moment.
A soft smile touched the young man’s face as he stepped back to look down at the sitting figure.
Light snow began to dust the dark wool of the coat, small white flakes clinging to the textured weave of the collar.
The old man looked straight up, his eyes wide and glinting with moisture under the streetlights.
A single clear tear escaped his eye, tracing a slow line down his wrinkled cheek and into his grey beard as he held the coat tight around his chest.
