Sprint Along The Rails
Two golden retrievers kicked loose gravel into the mountain stream below as their paws hammered the path beside the moving passenger cars.
The larger dog pushed forward with long, heavy strides, keeping his eyes locked on the open train windows above.
Beside him, a smaller puppy matched his pace, ears pinned back against the rush of wind coming off the green carriages.
Passengers pressed their faces against the glass, their hands gripping the open window sills as they pointed down at the pair running alongside the steel tracks.
The adult dog threw his head back and let out a series of sharp, persistent barks that cut over the rumble of the engine.
Boarding The Cabin
The steel wheels screeched against the rails as the massive green train slowed its momentum along the mountain curve.
A uniformed conductor leaned out through the open carriage door, raising his hands in confusion as the dogs pulled up alongside the steps.
The large retriever planted his front paws onto the metal boarding plate, stretching his body upward toward the conductor’s open palm.
With a quick scramble of paws, the small puppy leaped up behind him, squeezing through the doorway onto the ribbed metal flooring of the car.
Both dogs turned down the narrow hallway, pushing past passengers toward the front control cab where the driver sat at the throttle.
The older dog placed his front paws directly onto the control dash, barking toward the front windshield while the operator pulled the air brake lever completely back.
The Mountain Wall Collapses
The train ground to a complete standstill just as the canyon wall ahead began to fracture.
Giant boulders and thick plumes of gray dust slammed directly across the rails only yards from the front glass of the locomotive.
Shattered stones and heavy timber piled high across the tracks, burying the path where the train was scheduled to pass seconds later.
Inside the cabin, the driver remained seated with his hands clamped to the brake console, staring directly at the wall of rubble filling the windshield.
The two dogs dropped back onto all fours, standing side by side on the floor plates as the dust cloud settled over the glass.
Gathering On The Gravel
The carriage doors swung open into the cool mountain air as passengers stepped down onto the loose ballast beside the train.
A circle formed around the two retrievers as travelers dropped down to their knees along the gravel.
Hands reached out to stroke the thick golden fur along the older dog’s neck, while a young passenger set a small white bowl of fresh water down in front of the puppy’s paws.
