Uninvited In The Passenger Seat
A woman in a bright red dress placed her palm onto the wing mirror of a neon green Lamborghini Spyder.
She leaned closer to the silver-haired driver, smoothing her black leather jacket as she asked him to take her up the mountain trail before dark.
Rainwater coated the driveway outside the timber lodge, reflecting the orange light from the porch lamps.
The driver shifted his weight on the wet asphalt, tucking his thumbs into his brown leather jacket.
He told her clearly that he was waiting for his wife before the rally started.
The woman brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and gestured toward the empty interior.
She told him to let his wife wait, claiming she would be far more entertaining on the mountain road.
A Refusal To Step Aside
An older woman wearing a long burgundy coat walked around from behind the vehicle, holding a brown leather purse under her arm.
Without waiting for an invitation, the younger woman swung open the low car door and slid into the bucket seat.
She arranged her red dress over her knees and pulled her bag tight against her waist.
The older woman stopped at the side of the car, her gloved hands resting against her coat buttons as she looked down at the intruder.
The younger woman smiled up at her, stating that she was merely borrowing an open passenger seat.
The driver took two steps toward the car, pointing his index finger toward the driveway exit.
He ordered her to get out of his car immediately.
The young woman remained seated, looking away toward a black SUV parked further down the driveway and suggesting the wife take that car instead.
The Real Role Revealed
A rally coordinator wearing a black jacket and baseball cap stepped through the group holding a clipboard.
He handed a thick spiral-bound route book and two mechanical stopwatches directly to the woman in the burgundy coat.
He confirmed her name as Lucille and noted that the lead car timing setup remained unchanged.
The young woman in the passenger seat turned her head quickly, her eyes tracking the movement of the clipboard.
She asked if the older woman was actually navigating the route rather than just riding along.
Lucille flipped open the rally notebook, revealing hand-drawn turn diagrams, distance markers, and speed calculations sketched across the pages.
She replied that people often made that assumption right up until the first sharp turn of the course.
The driver stood alongside his wife, pointing down at the technical notes on the paper.
He told the intruder that guessing at rally speeds became dangerous very quickly, and that Lucille had kept him on course for forty-six years.
Forty-Six Years On The Road
A crew member walked over from the support vehicle carrying a large display board mounted on a stand.
He set it down on the wet pavement directly beside the green supercar.
Fixed to the board were three framed photographs capturing the couple in earlier eras of their motor racing history.
The top photo showed them in a classic convertible on their wedding day, the middle picture captured them inside a vintage rally sedan with racing helmets, and the bottom photo showed them standing together beside an older roadster.
The young woman looked at the images on the board, then at the detailed route book in Lucille’s gloved hands.
Her fingers unclasped from the inner door handle of the supercar.
She stood up from the leather bucket seat, stepped onto the wet driveway, and let the heavy car door click shut behind her.
Lucille stepped forward, opened the door, and took her place in the navigator seat, resting the route log across her knees.
The driver closed his door, shifted into gear, and pressed the accelerator.
The green sports car pulled out of the lodge courtyard, its rear tires kicking up a fine mist of water as it sped down the winding road toward the first checkpoint.
