A Discovery In The Channel
A dolphin turned in tight circles inside a narrow stone canal, its dorsal fin cutting through murky water littered with floating plastic bottles and driftwood.
A golden retriever walked along the rock ledge above, lowered its snout toward the surface, and let out three sharp barks.
The dog leaned over the edge, tail stiffening as the gray snout of the dolphin poked above the waterline just inches from a cluster of trapped plastic debris.
Paws scrambled against the loose sand as the retriever turned and sprinted toward the wooden lifeguard tower on the beach.
The Alarm Sounds
The dog bounded onto the sand in front of the lifeguard, whining and nudging the man’s legs before spinning back toward the rocky channel.
The lifeguard jogged across the sand behind the dog until both reached the lip of the concrete drain.
He dropped to one knee on the rocky bank, looked at the enclosed animal, and pulled a radio from his waist pack to call for backup.
Within minutes, four marine rescue specialists dressed in blue uniforms and rubber waders entered the shallow stream.
Clearing The Path
Two rescuers plunged long-handled nets into the water, scooping mounds of plastic bottles, tangled branches, and trash away from the canal exit.
They dumped the collected debris onto the shoreline, gradually widening the opening between the stone walls.
The remaining crew members slid a padded blue transport stretcher beneath the dolphin’s belly, supporting its flippers and head above the surface.
Working in unison, the team hoisted the stretcher and carried the dolphin past the cleared barrier toward the open ocean.
They lowered the sling into knee-deep surf and gently tilted the canvas forward, loosening their grip as the animal righted itself.
Back To The Ocean
The dolphin flicked its tail, pushing water against the team’s legs as it glided into deeper blue water.
On the stone embankment, the lifeguard stood alongside the rescue crew with his hand resting on the golden retriever’s head.
A few yards past the breakwater, the dolphin launched entirely out of the water in a high arc, sending a white splash across the sunlit surface before disappearing beneath the waves.
