Caught in the Green Mesh
The tiny yellow gosling struggled to pull its webbed foot from the tight holes of a green plastic cylinder resting in a muddy puddle.
Its small wings fluttered against the wet plastic as it tried repeatedly to push itself forward.
Just a few feet away, two adult Canada geese stood vigil in the damp earth beside a vintage green pickup truck.
Their long black necks remained upright, their dark eyes locked firmly on the chick’s movements.
A woman wearing an apron and rolled-up denim walked barefoot through the mud toward the puddle.
A Careful Approach
She lowered herself to the ground, sinking her knees into the soft, wet soil near the edge of the puddle.
The adult geese shifted their weight, taking small steps back while keeping their gaze fixed on her hands.
She placed both hands around the gosling’s fluffy body, supporting its chest with her palms.
Her fingers gently worked around the trapped foot, easing the small black claws out from the plastic grid.
She whispered soft reassurances as she guided the fragile leg free from the mesh opening.
The gosling let out a tiny peep as its foot slipped loose from the plastic cylinder.
Rejoining the Flock
The rescuer steadied the small bird on its feet right in the shallow muddy water.
The gosling stood upright, shook the dampness from its downy feathers, and took its first cautious steps forward.
Its parents let out low honks and turned toward the open, misty field behind them.
The tiny chick picked up speed, splashing through the shallow puddles as fast as its little legs could carry it.
The two adult geese guided the gosling down the flooded tractor path, disappearing together into the misty horizon.
