An Unexpected Call On The Sidewalk
An elderly man in a faded green military jacket hurried down the sidewalk, raising one arm to point directly at a passing stranger. The younger man in a long coat turned around, pausing his stride on the cold Chicago street.
The veteran held out an engraved bronze medal attached to a ribbon, pressing it forward toward the young man’s open palms. When told the medal belonged to someone else, the older man explained that he had carried it for fifty-three years after making a promise to return it to the soldier who saved him in Vietnam.
They sat down together on a snowy park bench. The veteran tilted the heavy medal in his weathered hands, pointing to the distinctive markings while recounting the ambush that left him stranded until a young comrade pulled him out of the line of fire.
Searching The Digital Archive
The younger man took out his smartphone, listening closely as the veteran explained that he had tried every conventional avenue for decades without success. Taking a clear photograph of the medal’s identification marks, he tapped his screen and promised to track down the serviceman’s records online.
One week later, the young man walked up the snow-dusted front steps of the veteran’s house. The older man stood up quickly from the porch bench, gripping the wooden rail as the young man held up his phone displaying verified records and contact details for the fallen soldier’s surviving family.
The next day, both men stood before a suburban front doorway decorated with winter pine. A woman opened the door, her eyes widening the moment the veteran raised the medal into view.
A Long Journey Home
The woman brought her hands to her chest as the veteran recounted his promise, placing the ribbon into her trembling fingers. She wrapped her arms tightly around his shoulders on the front porch as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Inside the living room, they sat around a low table beside a framed black-and-white photograph showing two young men in uniform. The daughter reached into an envelope, opening a handwritten letter from her father that asked his family to find the young soldier he had carried if he never made it back.
The veteran pressed his palms over his face as she read the words aloud. Reaching toward an open wooden keepsake box containing an American flag, the daughter pointed to an empty space where an official army replacement medal sat next to old army badges.
The veteran lifted the original bronze medal and set it gently into the velvet interior of the wooden box, his fingers resting on the polished wood beside the old service cap she handed him.
