A Strained Thanksgiving Setup
Ethan reached out and pulled the warm casserole dish straight from his mother’s hands.
Lucille stepped back, her hands dropping to her sides as her son handed the serving dish to his wife, Marissa.
The main dining table in the adjoining room was set with gold chargers, tall candles, and woven placemats for the holiday meal.
Ethan pointed a finger toward a small round wooden table situated in the sunroom, away from the primary dining area.
Lucille looked down at her green cardigan, resting her palm gently against her sweater while standing in the doorway.
Exiled to the Side Table
Ethan walked over to the sunroom table, grabbed a padded dining chair, and rolled it back toward the big room.
He picked up a gray metal folding chair from near the wall and unfolded it beside the small wooden table.
Lucille stared at the metal frame, her voice low as she asked if she was really expected to sit on a folding chair.
Ethan nodded toward the metal seat, telling her to sit down and stop making the entire holiday about her own feelings.
Lucille lowered herself onto the hard seat, resting her hands on her lap as she stared straight ahead at the tablecloth.
Ethan carried the white oval baking dish over and placed it directly in front of her on the small round table.
A Stand for Family
Marissa picked up her filled dinner plate from the long table and walked across the dark wood flooring into the sunroom.
She pulled out one of the upholstered chairs next to Lucille and sat down, resting her hands on the table edge.
Ethan stopped near the threshold, extending his palm outward as he asked why she was walking away from her assigned seat.
Marissa looked up at him calmly, stating that he was the person who turned the family gathering into a conflict.
Before Ethan could respond, young Ava entered the sunroom carrying her own plate and utensil.
She reached into the casserole dish with a large serving spoon and placed a portion onto her own plate.
Ethan raised his hand toward the doorway, telling Ava to put the spoon down and return to the main dining room immediately.
Ava kept her eyes on her father, explaining that nobody had forced her to move and that she chose to sit beside her grandmother.
Reconnecting Around the Meal
Ethan stood alone by the empty chairs of the long decorated dinner table, holding his ceramic plate in both hands.
He looked across the entryway toward the small sunroom, where every family member was now seated side by side around Lucille.
His shoulders dropped slightly as he looked down at the food on his plate.
Ethan walked across the braided rug, carrying his plate toward the crowded round table where everyone sat quietly.
He stood beside an empty cushioned chair, asking his mother if the seat beside her was still open for him.
Lucille looked up into his eyes, her lips relaxing into a soft smile as she nodded toward the empty place setting.
Ethan pulled the upholstered chair closer to the table, sat down, and rested his hands on the placemat next to his mother.
