A Sudden Standoff Beside the Water
The man slowed his pace on the paved trail when he noticed a tiny gosling resting flat against the asphalt.
Standing directly over the youngster, an adult Canada goose immediately flared its wings outward, snapping its beak and hissing sharply into the air.
The man raised both palms toward his chest and took a measured step backward onto the edge of the path.
Instead of turning away, he kept his voice soft and level, speaking directly to the agitated adult bird.
The mother lowered her neck slightly, her dark eyes tracking every shift of the man’s shoes against the gravel.
Careful Hands and Rising Stakes
The gosling remained pinned to the ground, unable to stand or follow the adult toward the tall reeds lining the lake.
Bending his knees, the man slowly lowered himself into a low squat right beside the small gray chick.
The mother goose lunged forward a few inches, releasing another harsh hiss, but stopped just short of making contact.
With deliberate, steady motions, the man slid both hands underneath the chick’s downy body and gently lifted it an inch above the pavement.
A thick web of clear monofilament fishing line was wrapped tightly around the gosling’s legs, body, and neck, pinning its limbs into an awkward tuck.
The man used his fingertips to work the fine plastic strands free from the soft feathers, unspooling each tight loop one by one.
The chick stayed remarkably still in his palms, barely shifting as the tension on its legs began to loosen.
Freeing the Stranded Gosling
Working slowly around the bird’s tiny wings, he teased the final loop of clear line over the chick’s beak and head.
As the tangled plastic slid away completely, the man gently rested the gosling back down onto the flat asphalt path.
The chick tested its feet, wobbling for a brief second before standing tall on both webbed feet.
Without a sound, the gosling waddled straight toward the adult goose, who instantly softened its posture and turned toward the water.
Both birds stepped through the tall green grass at the water’s edge and slipped into the calm lake together.
Rejoining the Family
A second gosling paddled out from beneath the overhanging reeds, joining the newly freed chick beside their mother.
The man crouched by the water’s edge, watching the three birds glide in a tight formation across the surface.
Reaching down into the grass beside his foot, he picked up the tangled ball of clear line he had removed from the bird.
He held the dense wad of discarded line up to the camera with a small smile before turning to watch the birds swim toward the far bank.
