The Pavement Outside
The black leather oxford slammed into the paper cup, sending copper and nickel skittering across the gray concrete.
An elderly woman knelt on the pavement, pulling a frayed brown coat tight against the morning chill. She reached out with open palms, her fingertips trembling against the cold ground as she tried to catch the rolling coins.
Above her stood a man in a tailored navy suit. He tapped his wristwatch with a sharp, rigid finger, glaring down at the sidewalk entrance.
His leather portfolio tucked tightly under his arm, he leaned forward and pointed toward the street curb. His mouth twisted as he barked sharp words, demanding that she clear the walkway immediately.
The woman bowed her head, whispering a brief apology while extending her hand toward the overturned cup. Instead of stepping aside, the man kicked the paper container a second time, sending it tumbling toward the gutter.
He turned on his heel and pushed through the revolving glass doors of the high-rise tower. Behind him on the sidewalk, the woman slowly gathered each coin one by one, tucking them into her worn sleeve.
The Executive Floor
Elevator doors slid open onto the top floor of the corporate headquarters. The man smoothed the lapels of his jacket, straightened his silk tie, and took a measured breath.
He gripped the brass handle of the corner office door and pulled it open. Polished mahogany furniture and floor-to-ceiling windows filled the sunlit room.
Sitting behind the large desk was a woman dressed in a tailored dark blazer, a single strand of pearls resting at her collar. Her silver hair was neatly pinned back, and her hands rested flat across a printed resume.
The man paused at the threshold, his eyes widening as his lower jaw drifted open. His fingers tightened their grip around his leather portfolio.
The woman at the desk slid the resume forward across the polished wood, tapping the paper with the tip of her index finger.
The Final Decision
The candidate took two tentative steps toward the desk, pulling his collar away from his throat as sweat formed along his hairline. He stammered, raising both hands with his palms out to offer an explanation.
The woman did not lean back in her leather armchair. She placed both palms flat against the wooden desk surface and slowly stood up to her full height.
She closed the paper file folder with a single, firm fold. Her hand extended forward, index finger pointing straight toward the open office doorway.
The man lowered his hands to his sides and dropped his chin toward his chest. He turned around, walking back out through the double doors as the woman stood motionless behind the mahogany desk, watching him exit into the hallway.
