An Unsteady Step In The Snow
A gloved hand pressed against the center of a dark wool coat as snow fell onto the quiet pavement.
The elderly man slowed his stride, his boots dragging slightly through the white drift accumulating along the park walkway.
Beside him, a golden retriever trotted along, matching his slow pace while glancing up toward his face.
The man gasped and bent his torso forward, reaching out toward the wooden backrest of a cold park bench.
His knees gave way, dropping directly into the snow beside the bench as he leaned his arm across the wooden slats.
The golden retriever turned immediately, pressing its muzzle close to the man’s scarf.
The man tilted his head up slightly and whispered softly, telling the dog that he was okay.
The retriever let out a single bark, its eyes wide as it backed away from the kneeling man.
A Dash Across The Snow
The golden retriever turned away from the bench and sprinted across the open snowy field toward a row of houses.
Its paws kicked up loose powder with every stride as it pushed toward a wooden porch fronting a two-story home.
The dog leaped onto the porch steps without slowing down.
It raised both front paws and slammed them firmly against the dark wooden front door.
The dog scratched repeatedly at the wood, letting out urgent barks toward the glass panels above the handle.
The door swung open, revealing a woman in a dark jacket looking down in confusion.
She looked around the empty porch, her eyes widening as she asked where Walter was.
The dog turned on its heels, barking back at her before bounding down the porch steps into the yard.
She pulled a dark shoulder bag across her coat, stepped into the snow, and told the dog to take her to him.
Finding Help In The Cold
The retriever led the way across the snow-covered park, running ahead before stopping to look back and ensure she was following.
Street lamps cast a soft glow across the park, revealing the dark figure slumped against the base of the wooden bench.
The woman broke into a jog, her boots slipping slightly on the icy path as she approached.
She dropped to her knees in the snow beside the man, reaching out to grip the lapels of his heavy coat.
She called his name, asking what had happened out in the cold.
The man raised his chin slowly, his breath misting in the freezing air as he murmured that he had become too weak to walk.
The woman looked toward the golden retriever standing motionless beside them and noted that the dog had come to find help.
The man looked at his companion and replied that the dog always knew when something was wrong.
Warmth Inside The Living Room
Inside the warm living room, the woman guided the man down onto the edge of a soft fabric sofa.
She draped a heavy plaid blanket over his shoulders, tucking the edges neatly around his neck and arms.
She set a warm bowl down on the low wooden table in front of him, instructing him to take small bites and take his time.
The man looked up at her, his voice quiet as he noted that she did not have to do all of this for him.
She glanced down toward the floor, replying that the dog was the one who made sure it happened.
The golden retriever stepped close to the sofa, resting its heavy chin directly onto the man’s knee.
Tears welled in the woman’s eyes as she watched the two of them sit closely together in the warm light.
The man wrapped both arms around the dog’s neck, pulling the retriever’s head tightly against his chest while resting his cheek against its soft golden fur.
