Refuge in the Cold
A uniformed station officer raised his gloved hand and pointed toward the cold platform exit.
On the bench below, an elderly man wrapped in a checkered blanket pulled his knit cap down over his ears while his young granddaughter held a worn teddy bear close to her chest.
The officer explained that the next train would not arrive until five in the morning and that sleeping on the bench was forbidden.
Anna stepped into the falling snow, adjusting her white coat as she looked at the child sitting on the bench.
She walked up to the bench, rested her hand lightly on her coat pocket, and offered them a place to stay inside her garage.
The old man gripped his leather travel bag, his head tilting down as he mentioned that they had no money to offer in return.
Anna smiled, gesturing for them to follow her down the street toward her house.
Tension at Home
Inside the warm garage, the little girl named Lily sat at a wooden table with a set of colored pencils spread out in front of her.
She grasped a dark brown pencil, carefully shading the curved lines of a sketch on paper.
Anna leaned over the table, placing both hands on her knees to get a closer view of the drawing.
When asked about the picture, Lily looked up, her smile showing a missing tooth, and explained that she was drawing Jesus because she loved capturing people’s faces.
Her grandfather stood beside the workbench, resting a hand on Lily’s shoulder while snow melted on his dark jacket.
Later that evening, Anna’s husband stepped into the house and closed the front door with a sharp click.
He paced across the living room carpet, waving his arms as he spoke to Anna in sharp, quick sentences.
His brow furrowed as he pointed back toward the garage, raising concerns about safety and their tight household budget.
Anna stood her ground, placing her hand over her heart while making her case to keep the door open to those in need.
An Accusation in the Garage
A few days passed, and the husband marched into the garage with heavy footsteps.
He jabbed his index finger toward the old man, asking where the stored supplies of coffee, flour, and cocoa had gone.
The grandfather raised both hands, palms outward, shaking his head slowly as he explained that they had taken nothing.
Unconvinced, the husband raised his voice further and gestured toward the open garage doorway, ordering them to leave immediately.
Lily buried her face into her grandfather’s coat, tears streaming down her cheeks as she pulled her knit cap tighter over her ears.
The grandfather gently patted her shoulder, picked up his leather bag, and guided her out into the winter air.
Back at the train platform, the grandfather knelt down to eye level with Lily, holding her hands while trains rumbled past in the background.
Lily squeezed her plush bunny toy against her coat, her eyes red as she looked toward the tracks.
Uncovering the Unexpected Gift
Anna walked out into the quiet garage shortly after they had left.
She looked around the room, her eyes sweeping across the empty wooden table and the neatly folded blankets on the bench.
Her gaze caught a bulky shape near the back wall, covered entirely by a plain white sheet.
Anna stepped across the concrete floor, lifted her hands, and took hold of the top edge of the fabric.
She pulled the sheet downward in one fluid motion, letting the white cloth pile up around her boots.
Beneath the sheet sat a large, gilded picture frame containing a painted portrait.
The painting captured Anna herself, dressed in her white sweater, with her arm wrapped tenderly around the shoulders of her mother.
Anna raised her hand to her lips, her eyes widening as tears pooled along her eyelashes while looking at the painting.
