A Coffee Shop Confession
Zaire sat across the wooden table at the coffee shop, gripping his paper coffee cup with both hands while leaning toward Alara. He paused before speaking, opening up about his feelings for her. Alara held her cup firmly, looking directly across the table as she softly explained that she did not feel the same way.
Zaire lowered his gaze to the wooden table, his thumbs tracing the seam of his cup. He asked if her feelings were influenced by their differences or his skin color. Alara shook her head gently, reassuring him that her response had nothing to do with his background or appearance.
Seeking Answers On Campus
Later in the day, Alara walked through the campus courtyard carrying a stack of notebooks and her coffee. Zaire sat on a wooden bench nearby, looking up as she stopped in front of him. He asked why they could not at least try to go on a date.
Alara held her books against her chest and stood her ground, explaining that she did not have romantic feelings for him. Zaire leaned forward, clasping his hands between his knees as he expressed how much he cared for her. She requested that he respect her answer before turning to walk away across the brick path.
Understanding The Boundary
In the library, framed by tall wooden shelves packed with books, Zaire walked behind Alara down a quiet aisle. He raised his palms toward her, asking her not to walk away from the conversation. She turned around, holding a thick textbook in both hands against her shirt.
Zaire explained that being turned down made him feel terrible. Alara listened quietly, acknowledging that his feelings were valid, but made it clear she would not say yes out of guilt. Zaire’s chin dipped toward his chest, his shoulders dropping as he conceded that he needed to accept her boundary.
Walking Together As Friends
Days later, the two walked side by side along the paved campus walkways lined with autumn foliage. Zaire looked over at her and apologized for putting pressure on her during their previous conversations. Alara smiled softly and thanked him for taking the time to listen and understand.
They sat down on a wooden bench beneath the yellowing trees, conversing calmly. Zaire acknowledged that she had every right to make her own choices, and he asked if they could remain friends. Alara laughed warmly, agreeing that being friends was a great outcome.
The two walked side by side down the paved campus path, their shadows lengthening across the concrete beneath the autumn foliage.
