A Stride Through Polished Halls
An elderly man walked across the marble lobby, holding a scuffed leather portfolio against his ribs.
Frayed stitching showed along the lapel of his faded grey suit jacket.
Before he could reach the inner reception desk, a young employee in a tailored suit stepped directly into his path and raised a flat palm.
“Stop,” the employee said, leaning forward over the counter. “You cannot just walk in here.”
The older man paused, placing his aged hands flat on the top of the worn leather binder.
“I need to speak with the manager,” he said evenly.
The Barrier at the Counter
The young man scoffed, his gaze drifting over the visitor from head to toe.
“People like you do not demand managers,” he said, shaking his head.
He raised an index finger, pointing directly toward the loose threads near the visitor’s shoulder.
“Look at your clothes,” the employee said, his eyebrows furrowing. “Look at this place. You clearly do not belong here.”
The older man kept his posture upright, his hands remaining planted on the counter.
“You are leaving,” the worker added, tapping the polished wood surface. “Now.”
The visitor looked down toward the employee’s hand and spoke without raising his voice.
“Move your hand,” the older man said.
“Or what?” the employee challenged, narrowing his eyes.
Reaching across the marble desk, the young worker grabbed a black phone receiver, punched an internal extension, and spoke into the mouthpiece.
“I need someone up here right now,” he said, clicking the receiver back down into its cradle.
An Unexpected Arrival
Footsteps echoed across the hallway behind the reception area.
A female executive dressed in a dark business suit stepped into view through the glass doors, clutching a digital tablet against her arm.
“Mr. Walker?” she called out, stepping quickly toward the counter.
The young worker turned his head, gesturing dismissively at the elderly visitor.
“You know this man?” the worker asked.
“Of course I know him,” the executive replied, stepping alongside the older man. “The board has been waiting for you, Mr. Walker.”
The employee blinked rapidly, his shoulders pulling back as his posture stiffened.
“Why?” he stammered, looking between the two of them.
“Because he owns this bank,” she stated plainly.
A Final Step Forward
The employee’s mouth fell slightly open, his hands lowering to his sides.
Mr. Walker turned his head slowly to face the young worker once more.
“You judged my clothes,” Mr. Walker said, holding the folder in one hand. “I was deciding whether you deserved yours.”
The lobby remained quiet as the employee lowered his chin toward his chest.
“Pack your things,” Mr. Walker added quietly. “You are finished.”
Mr. Walker adjusted his grip on the leather folder, turned away from the counter, and walked down the center of the hallway toward the boardroom doors.
