A Sudden Struggle In The Mud
The eagle’s yellow talons clawed violently against the wet soil as rusty wire cinched tightly around its leg.
Its dark wings beat against the marsh surface, kicking up water and silt with every desperate pull against the wooden piling.
Above the tideline, several other eagles circled low through the overcast gray sky, watching the commotion below.
Closing The Distance
Two wildlife handlers in green jackets and heavy rubber boots broke into a run across the wet flats.
Water splashed up to their knees as they pushed through the sodden mud, carrying heavy wire snips and protective leather gloves.
The bird flared its wings wide, opening its curved yellow beak in defense as the two figures knelt into the marsh beside it.
Working Against The Wire
The woman slid her thick gloved hands over the bird’s back, pressing firmly to secure its primary feathers against its body.
The eagle blinked rapidly, tilting its white-feathered head as the man leaned close to inspect the tangle.
Thick strands of rusted cable were looped three times around the base of the bird’s right talon, biting into the scales.
He positioned the red-handled cutters against the first loop of wire, squeezing the handles together with both hands.
The metal snapped with a sharp click, loosening the tension on the trapped foot.
Working slowly around the sharp talons, he unwound the severed metal section by section, pulling the rusted strands out from between the claws.
The bird ceased its thrashing, resting its breast against the cool mud while the handlers cleared the final piece of cable from its leg.
Taking To The Skies
The handlers checked the eagle’s foot for deep lacerations, gently flexing the joint to verify range of motion.
Both rescuers gripped the underside of the eagle’s body and lifted upward in a smooth, continuous motion.
With a single powerful downward stroke of its wings, the eagle lifted straight into the evening air.
It banked over the open water and settled directly onto the top of the weathered wooden post, looking down as the clouds broke into warm sunset light.
