Protective Geese Watch Closely As Stranger Approaches Their Trapped Gosling

Tangled In The Wire

The tiny yellow gosling shoved its head forward, driving its soft neck deeper into a square of coated green garden fencing.

Its downy body kicked against the damp turf, but the wire frame held firm around its shoulders.

A few yards back, two adult Canada geese stood side by side on long black legs, honking low, guttural warning notes.

Their necks stretched straight up toward the foggy grey sky, their black eyes locked onto the struggling chick.

Every time the baby flapped its stubby wings, the parent birds stepped forward, their webbed feet flattening the wet blades of grass.

Mud pooled along the ditch where the wire lay flat, pinning the little bird just inches from open pasture.

Moving In Under A Watchful Eye

A pair of yellow rubber boots squelched through the muddy turf, approaching from behind the tailgate of a white pickup truck.

The rescuer bent at the knees, lowering her frame slowly so her silhouette stayed small against the misty backdrop.

Thick leather work gloves covered her hands as she rested both boots flat against the slippery slope.

The adult geese took three quick paces forward, craning their necks outward and hissing through open beaks.

The woman remained crouched on her haunches, keeping her palms flat and low above the ground to avoid sudden shifts.

She reached out one gloved hand, placing a thumb firmly against the upper edge of the wire cylinder to pin it still.

Working The Tangled Wings Free

The gosling let out high-pitched chirps, thrashing its legs against the sodden dirt.

With her right hand, the rescuer gently cupped the bird’s flank, wrapping her leather fingers around its tiny chest to stop the wild kicking.

She examined where the wire intersected at the base of the chick’s neck.

One wing was hooked over a green crossbar, while the opposite foot remained wedged beneath the bottom rim.

She pulled back slightly on the mesh with her left hand, widening the square opening by a fraction of an inch.

Her right thumb nudged the gosling’s downy shoulder backward, sliding the trapped wing out from the pinch point.

The parents let out another synchronized honk, shifting their weight from side to side in the wet grass.

She repositioned her fingers, gently guiding the chick’s head downward so its beak cleared the upper metal strand.

The chick squirmed, wriggled its tail feathers, and pulled its rear legs free from the netting in one sudden burst.

Rejoining The Family Track

The woman pulled her hands straight back and rested them against her knees, leaving a wide open corridor on the lawn.

“Easy, little goose,” she murmured, remaining motionless on the ground.

The freed chick stumbled forward onto its webbed feet, shook its fluffy yellow tail, and scrambled past the edge of the mesh.

It sprinted directly toward the two towering adults, its short legs churning across the muddy ditch.

The parents lowered their long black necks, flanking the gosling on either side until it was tucked between their bodies.

Together, the trio turned away from the truck, waddling in single file down a water-filled tire track toward the white fence and distant red barn.
