A Sudden Pour On A Sidewalk Display
Dark coffee splashed across the top row of neatly folded white shirts, soaking deep into the cotton fabric.
Bill gripped the blue canvas armrests of his lawn chair, his mouth falling open as the liquid dripped down the wooden table legs. The man holding the empty ceramic mug chuckled and walked away down the residential sidewalk.
A cardboard sign nailed to the front of the trestle table read “WHITE SHIRTS – $10 EACH.” Every single stack of fresh inventory now carried expanding brown rings.
Bill pushed himself up slowly from the folding chair. His knuckles pressed against the edge of the wood as he stared at the ruined fabric.
Two Officers Step Up To The Table
Two uniformed police officers arrived at the curb just as Bill began gathering the edges of a ruined collar. The taller officer laid a hand gently on the folded laundry, signaling Bill to stop.
The younger officer unhooked the metal clothing rack standing beside the table, rolling it along the pavement while his partner gathered the ruined inventory stack by stack. Bill shuffled ahead of them in his denim shorts and sandals, rubbing his palms against his thighs.
They guided Bill toward the cruiser parked along the curb. He climbed into the passenger compartment, staring down at the floor mats as the door clicked shut.
Inside the vehicle, Bill buried his face in his hands. His shoulders rose and dipped while the cruiser navigated through neighborhood side streets toward the downtown corridor.
The driver kept one hand on the steering wheel and glanced over, tapping the laptop mount on the dashboard without saying a word. Bill kept his fingers pressed against his temples, his eyes shut behind wire-rimmed spectacles.
A Walk Down The Brick Sidewalk
The patrol car pulled up beside a multi-story brick building downtown. Both officers stepped out and opened the door for Bill, each taking a position beside his elbows.
Bill walked with his head tilted down toward the concrete, both hands pressed over his face. The officers kept a light touch on his shoulders, steering him past the large plate-glass display windows.
Above the storefront entrance hung a navy banner that read “COMMUNITY THREADS.” Right beside the front glass stood a floor-to-ceiling portrait of Bill wearing his orange shirt and smiling broadly.
The officer on the right nudged Bill gently and urged him to lower his fingers. Bill pulled his hands away from his nose, blinked at the glass storefront, and let his jaw drop.
The Doors Swing Open
Inside the brightly lit store, rows of polished clothing racks lined the exposed brick walls. Racks of collared shirts and neat denim stood beneath black track lighting.
Dozens of shoppers, neighbors, and staff members turned toward the front entrance as Bill stepped through the frame. The entire room erupted into rhythmic clapping, hands waving from every aisle and corner.
A young woman behind the wooden sales counter rested both palms beside the cash register and beamed. Three older patrons in the center aisle leaned over the polished wood counter, clapping and nodding toward the entrance.
Bill slid onto a tall wooden stool at the checkout desk. He threw his arms wide open toward the crowd, laughing through wet eyes as applause echoed against the high timber rafters.
