A Confrontation on the Sidewalk
An older man rested his hands on a worn leather bag, sitting quietly on the granite ledge outside a glass skyscraper.
His brown overcoat was frayed at the seams, with holes dotting the fabric near his shoulders and elbows. His faded denim jeans had tears across the knees as pedestrian traffic streamed past the towering revolving doors behind him.
A younger man dressed in a dark blue tailored suit pushed through the revolving glass doors and stopped directly in front of the stone ledge.
He pointed an index finger at the older man’s chest. His jaw set firmly as he motioned toward the open street, demanding that the man vacate the area immediately.
An Unexpected Exchange
The seated man looked up, his grey hair windblown across his forehead, and spoke in a low, measured voice. He explained that he was simply waiting for someone from the company.
The young businessman threw his head back and laughed loudly, resting his hands on his hips. He leaned down, shaking his head with a wide grin, mocking the claim while pedestrians in business attire hurried around them.
The older man remained still on the stone ledge, his hands resting on his bag, looking back at the younger man without shifting his posture or raising his voice.
A second set of revolving doors spun open. Four executives in matching charcoal suits walked out into the courtyard, scanning the perimeter.
The Executive Approach
A senior executive with silver hair broke away from the group and walked quickly toward the granite bench.
He stopped beside the seated man, reached out, and placed a hand gently on his shoulder before leaning in close. He addressed him as sir, explaining that the entire board was waiting upstairs for the scheduled meeting to begin.
The young businessman stepped back. His hands dropped to his sides, his eyes widening as he stared between the silver-haired executive and the man in the frayed coat.
The senior executive turned toward the young employee, motioning with his thumb toward the seated man. He stated clearly that the man in the torn coat owned the entire corporation.
The young employee stood motionless on the pavement, his mouth open and his eyebrows raised in disbelief.
Entering the Building
The older man gripped the edge of the stone bench and pushed himself up onto his feet. He adjusted the lapels of his worn jacket and looked directly at the younger man.
The young employee attempted to stammer an apology, shifting his weight nervously from foot to foot as his gaze darted down toward the ground.
The older man spoke quietly, noting that the employee had judged him purely on his appearance before ever knowing who he was.
Turning toward the glass facade, the owner walked steadily toward the revolving doors. As he passed, three executives bowed their heads in unison, holding the entrance open as he stepped inside the corporate lobby.
