Tangled by the Roadside
A gloved hand reached toward the tangled bundle of brown and white feathers pinned against the gravel path. The large raptor shifted its weight, pressing its chest into the dirt as green plastic netting pulled tighter across its back.
A few yards away, an adult bald eagle perched upright on a weathered wooden post. Its yellow eyes stayed locked on the person kneeling in the weeds.
The rescuer moved slowly, sliding one knee onto the damp stone path. In his right hand, a pair of handheld cutters gleamed against the overcast sky.
Careful Blades and Tight Knots
The trapped eagle turned its hooked beak, tracking the blade as it approached the mesh. The green synthetic strands wrapped firmly across the bird’s primary wing joints, holding its broad wings flush against its flanks.
The rescuer settled his boots into the gravel to anchor his balance. He worked his fingers beneath the first taut strand, lifting it a fraction of an inch away from the plumage before squeezing the handles.
A clean snap parted the plastic. The bird let out a brief hiss, but kept its talons tucked underneath its breast.
Above on the post, the second eagle shifted its talons along the rough wood. It ruffled its mantle feathers once and settled back down, never looking away from the gravel shoulder.
The rescuer worked through the lattice strand by strand. With each cut, he peeled back loops of netting, carefully pulling the green twine away from the quill bases.
His movements stayed measured and quiet. He paused between cuts to let the eagle settle whenever its shoulders twitched against the loose cords.
Testing the Slack
After snipping a thick tangle around the lower back, the rescuer caught the edge of the mesh and peeled it downward. The netting fell into a loose pile on the muddy grass.
The bird felt the sudden release of tension along its spine. Its neck extended forward, feathers bristling along its crown as it surveyed the open field ahead.
The person rocked back onto his heels, keeping both hands low and out of the strike zone of the bird’s curved bill. He spoke softly under his breath, giving the raptor room to assess its limbs.
For a brief two seconds, the bird remained completely grounded on the path. Its black talons flexed into the stone, testing the gravel for grip.
Taking to the Wind
Then its shoulders surged upward. Two massive, dark wings snapped wide, their tips brushing the tall grass alongside the ditch.
With a single powerful push from its legs, the bird lifted clear off the dirt. It drove its wings downward twice, carving an arc through the cool air.
The bird banked sharply toward the ditch line, heading straight for the wooden post where the bald eagle stood waiting. Its wide tail fanned out as it braked, extending its talons toward the perch right beside its companion.
