A Sudden Snatch On The Sidewalk
The cyclist’s hand closed around the brown leather straps and ripped the purse straight off the woman’s shoulder. Her arms flew back as the momentum jerked her balance off the curb.
She cried out, stumbling backward on the concrete while the young man stood up on his pedals, surging forward down the residential street.
Before the cyclist reached the corner, a golden retriever named Barkley bolted past the curb with paws churning through dry autumn leaves.
The Chase Across The Lawn
Barkley matched the speed of the bicycle’s spinning spokes, barking sharply as he closed the gap. The rider glanced over his shoulder, wobbled on the handlebars, and swerved hard toward the open grass.
The dog did not break stride. Barkley cut inside the turn, snapping at the pedals and forcing the front wheel into a tight, uncontrollable wobble.
The cyclist kicked his legs out to brace himself, but the frame tilted sideways. Metal clattered against the turf as the bike dumped him onto the lawn.
Retrieving What Was Lost
Scrambling to his feet, the young man abandoned the bicycle and ran full speed toward the distant park trees. Barkley did not chase him further.
Instead, the dog lowered his muzzle to the ground where the fallen bicycle lay tangled in leaves. His teeth clamped gently around the leather handle of the brown purse, lifting it clean off the dirt.
He turned back toward the sidewalk, trotting steadily with his tail waving in wide, rhythmic sweeps.
A Warm Reunion
The elderly woman stood on the grass with her hands resting against her chest, watching the golden coat draw closer. Barkley walked straight up to her knees and lowered the bag into her outstretched fingers.
She sank down onto the grass, wrapping both arms around the dog’s neck. Barkley pressed his chin firmly over her shoulder, letting out a soft breath as she stroked his ears against the autumn sunlight.
