Caught in the Netting
Heavy rubber boots sank into the damp mud at the water’s edge.
A pair of thick leather work gloves gripped the edge of a plastic erosion grid pinned to the soil.
Beneath the tight black synthetic weave, a young alligator struggled against the corded squares pinning its yellow-and-black banded tail.
Just a few yards away in the dark retention pond, two dark eyes broke the flat surface of the water.
An adult alligator floated motionless, snout pointed straight toward the bank, keeping its body aligned with the man kneeling on the shoreline.
The man knelt down on one knee in the wet dirt, lowering his straw hat against the morning sun.
He drew a thin pocketknife from his side, sliding the blade carefully beneath one of the plastic mesh strands holding the juvenile reptile down.
Careful Work Along the Water
The baby gator jerked its head sideways, snapping its small jaws as the man leaned closer.
Every movement on the bank sent small ripples through the mud, while the larger silhouette in the pond remained locked in place.
The man kept his torso low and steady, avoiding sudden motions that might stir the water ahead.
With a firm sawing motion, he sliced through the first strand of plastic wire.
The blade snagged on the tough synthetic fibers, requiring him to shift his grip and saw through the tight knot twice.
He peeled back the rough edges with his gloved thumb, keeping the blade angled away from the animal’s soft belly.
The small reptile hissed softly, pressing its underside against the mud as the man worked on the next trapped scute.
He worked down along the tail, cutting strand after strand until the black grid began to pull away.
“Easy, easy little gator,” the man murmured under his breath, his voice low and rhythmic.
He worked his fingers under the mesh, pulling the remaining fibers up and over the scaly ridges of the animal’s back.
Clearing the Final Strand
The juvenile twisted in place, its claws scrabbling against the muddy earth beneath the netting.
The man reached down with both gloved hands, grasping the small alligator firmly just behind its forelegs.
He lifted the banded reptile clear of the tangle, checking to see if any remaining loops remained caught around its claws.
The larger alligator in the pool shifted slightly, turning its head by an inch as the man set the young one down onto the open mud bank.
For a brief second, the juvenile paused on the wet slope, its yellow stripes bright against the dark earth.
The man stepped back, resting his hands on his knee as he watched the space between the shoreline and the pond.
The little reptile scrambled forward on short legs, churning through the soft mud directly toward the pool.
Returning to the Deep
It slid down the slick black liner of the pond, entering the water with a clean, low splash.
Its banded tail swung in quick lateral arcs, cutting a straight line across the mirrored surface.
The adult remained partially submerged, snout resting level with the surface as the small ripples spread out toward it.
The juvenile swam straight into the open water, dipping beneath the surface until only a trail of circular ripples remained expanding toward the grassy banks.
