An Argument at the Counter
An elderly man in a corduroy jacket held a paper prescription note across the counter toward a pharmacy technician.
The worker pointed at her ear and shook her head, refusing to handle his paper order.
She claimed she had already spoken twice and told him to stop pretending he could hear her.
The customer quietly requested that she repeat just one sentence so he could understand her instructions.
Instead of answering, she suggested that he should not be managing his own medications at his age.
She turned her head away, tapping her fingers against the counter while the man waited patiently.
Escalating Tension
The technician pulled a white paper prescription bag toward herself and leaned back from the glass divider.
She told him to bring someone younger next time because she was not there to babysit anyone.
The elderly man leaned closer to the glass and stated that it was his personal prescription.
She picked up the desk phone and called for assistance, speaking aloud as if he were absent.
She loudly invited the person behind him in line to step forward instead.
The elderly man stated he was still standing right in front of her counter.
She smiled, motioning to the line of waiting customers behind his back.
Into the receiver, she complained that the customer was failing to follow basic directions.
Intervention in Line
The man standing behind him in line stepped up to the glass partition and looked directly at the staff member.
He told her that the customer had asked one clear question and that she was making a dramatic scene out of it.
She snapped back, telling the bystander to mind his own business and stay out of the conversation.
The customer in the brown jacket pointed to the counter and stated she was turning a simple interaction into everyone’s problem.
She maintained that the senior gentleman was holding up the entire queue.
The bystander repeated that the gentleman had simply asked for a single sentence to be spoken again.
The Manager Takes Over
A male supervisor wearing a dark blue shirt and an identification badge walked up from the back pharmacy area.
He stood next to the technician and asked if she had told the elderly customer to stop pretending he could hear.
She tried to explain that the man was not comprehending simple instructions.
The supervisor pointed his arm toward the back office and ordered her to step away from the counter immediately.
She raised her hands in frustration and questioned if he was taking action against her over this specific customer.
The manager stated clearly that he was taking action because of her conduct, not the customer’s request.
He picked up the white prescription paper bag from the counter top.
He handed the white bag directly to Mr. Harlan and offered an apology for how he was treated.
The senior customer accepted the prescription, rested his hand on the counter edge, and thanked the manager.
