A Cold Demand At The Table
Daniel leans his knuckles hard against the wooden table, his fingers pinning Margaret’s wrist beside a stack of legal documents. His jaw stays clenched as his face hovers inches from hers, waiting for the pen to move.
Margaret pulls back against her chair, her eyes wide as she clutches her cardigan shut. Across the kitchen, a woman in a dark blouse unscrews a yellow plastic pill bottle over the stainless steel sink.
The amber cylinder tilts over the open drain. Little yellow tablets rattle against the rim, threatening to slip down into the dark pipes if the paperwork remains blank.
Margaret shakes her head, refusing to lean forward. An open palm strikes across Margaret’s cheek, snapping her head to the side with a sharp, dry crack.
Stalling In The Shadows
Margaret touches her cheek, her fingers trembling against her pale skin as she looks up at the man standing over her. He does not pull back his hand from the table; he simply keeps his grip firm against the wood.
Margaret lowers her gaze toward the blank line at the bottom of the deed. She tells them her reading glasses are upstairs on the nightstand, explaining that she cannot sign the correct line in the dim lighting without them.
Daniel steps back from the table, turning toward the dark hallway stairs to retrieve the case. The woman remains behind the chair, crossing her arms and watching every breath Margaret takes.
Footsteps creak on the floorboards directly overhead. The rhythmic thumping stops near the doorway of the master bedroom, followed by the quiet murmur of two distinct male voices.
The Lens Above
Upstairs, Daniel freezes in the open doorway as a uniformed officer steps out from the shadows beside the dresser. In the officer’s hand, a black smartphone stays level, its front lens aimed straight at Daniel’s chest.
Officer Michael Hayes steps forward into the hallway light, his finger tapping the screen to lock the active recording. He gestures toward the staircase, ordering Daniel back down into the kitchen without lowering the phone.
The woman rushes toward the front door, dialing three digits into her own phone to claim an intruder has entered the house. Behind the wood frame, two more officers are already standing on the porch mat, radios humming quietly on their vests.
The screen of Hayes’s phone lights up the center of the kitchen table as the audio plays aloud. The recorded threat regarding the pill bottle echoes clearly through the quiet room, followed immediately by the sharp audio clap of the strike.
Facing What Remains
Metal ratchets click behind the backs of both Daniel and the woman as the two officers slide steel cuffs around their wrists. Hayes steps beside Margaret, placing one hand gently on her shoulder while the rest of the paperwork remains untouched on the wood.
Daniel turns his head away from the door, his eyes shifting toward the floorboards near Margaret’s slippers. He mutters an apology toward her lap, his shoulders slumped as the officers guide him backward toward the entryway.
Margaret does not lift her hand from the table to wave or point. She keeps both palms pressed flat against the wooden surface, watching the front door latch shut as red and blue light sweeps briefly across the glass windowpanes.
