Struggling Boy Pleads With Strangers To Buy His Handcrafted Dolls

A Fistful of Copper Coins

The boy stopped mid-stride on the uneven cobblestones and opened his right palm. Two thin coins clinked together against his skin. His lower lip trembled as his brow tightened, tears welling in the corners of his eyes before he quickly wiped his sleeve across his face.

He reached inside his canvas shoulder satchel and pulled out a small cloth doll. Its yarn hair brushed against his dirt-streaked knuckles as he turned toward the sidewalk. He held the doll out toward passing coats and trousers, his voice cracking as he asked pedestrian after pedestrian to stop.

Every walker kept their eyes straight ahead. Footsteps echoed loudly down the narrow alleyway, each person stepping briskly past his outstretched arm. The boy lowered the doll to his waist, clutching its soft fabric body against his faded blue hoodie.

A Curious Gaze on the Sidewalk

A woman wearing a tailored beige trench coat rounded the corner carrying a dark leather handbag. The boy stepped into her path, lifting the doll once more toward her chest. His voice shook as he explained that his mother needed medicine at home.

The woman slowed her pace and stopped directly in front of him. Her eyes shifted from the stitched face of the toy to the boy’s worn canvas shoes, then up to the dark rings beneath his eyes. She tilted her head slightly, parted her lips, and watched him turn away when another pedestrian brushed past his shoulder.

Instead of turning down the avenue toward the shops, she stopped against the masonry wall. She kept her distance on the walkway, tracking the boy as he moved from one storefront to the next. When he finally stood counting several paper bills in his small hands, she remained several yards behind him, observing the sudden change in his pace.

A Race to the Apothecary Counter

The boy broke into an outright sprint, his rubber soles slapping hard against the stone pavers. He pushed open the heavy wooden door of the local pharmacy, the overhead bell clattering against the frame. He leaned his chest against the polished wooden counter and slapped the folded bills onto the wood.

The elderly pharmacist adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, inspected the cash, and turned toward the glass medicine cabinets behind him. He pulled down a cardboard carton and a dark amber glass bottle, setting them before the child. The boy scooped both items into his satchel, spun on his heel, and ran out into the street without waiting for a bag.

He sprinted across town until he reached a decaying doorway leading into a dimly lit room. Inside, his mother rested on an iron cot beneath a plain linen sheet, her cheeks pale and hollow. The boy unscrewed the amber bottle, poured a spoonful of dark liquid, and guided the metal spoon toward her parted lips. She swallowed, closed her eyes, and pulled his cheek against her collarbone.

An Unexpected Knock on the Door

A firm rap on the wooden door frame broke the quiet room. The boy pulled away from his mother’s arms, hurried across the bare floorboards, and pulled the door open a few inches. The woman in the beige coat stood on the stone threshold, holding a leather folder under her arm.

He stared up at her in surprise, asking why she had followed his path through the city. She stepped quietly across the doorway into the dim interior. She glanced at the empty medicine bottle on the small wooden bedside table and the bare plaster peeling along the stone wall.

She set her heavy bag on the wooden table, stepped over to the iron bedframe, and placed both hands gently on the boy’s shoulders. The mother pushed herself upright on the mattress and wrapped both arms tightly around her son’s waist, burying her face into his blue sweater while the woman stood beside them, smiling down at the pair.
