A Refusal at the Counter
An elderly woman slid a folded white slip across the polished marble counter.
She held a small brown leather handbag in both hands, resting her fingers against the clasp.
The teller, dressed in a tailored navy suit and red tie, glanced down at the paper.
He did not pick it up.
Instead, he placed a single palm against the sheet and slid it back across the marble surface.
His eyebrows pulled inward as he shook his head.
He stated plainly that the request would not be handled at his station.
The woman tilted her head slightly, keeping both feet planted firmly on the tile.
She explained that she had only asked to access her own funds.
The teller leaned forward, his hands flat against the ledge, and instructed her to take her business elsewhere.
Stepping Out From the Desk
He stepped out from behind the teller station and walked directly into the open lobby.
He raised an index finger, pointing toward the double doors near the front entrance.
Other patrons turned their heads, watching the space between them tighten.
The teller scanned her faded beige cardigan and plain slacks.
He warned her that security personnel would be summoned if she remained in the lobby.
The woman remained still, her shoulders square.
She opened her clasp purse, lifted a mobile phone, and raised it to her ear.
She spoke briefly into the receiver without raising her voice.
Before she finished speaking, rapid footsteps echoed across the lobby floor.
The Screen on the Desk
A branch manager wearing a black blazer and white name badge arrived at the center of the room.
Her eyes moved rapidly between the teller and the woman holding the phone.
She lowered her head slightly and spoke directly to the woman, asking why she had not been greeted upon entering.
The teller frowned, shifting his weight between his polished shoes.
He pointed toward the paper still resting on the counter.
The manager stepped behind the desk and tapped a few keys on the computer terminal.
A blue database window loaded onto the screen.
Across the top banner, the account details displayed a total balance of forty-eight million seven hundred thousand dollars.
The manager turned back toward the counter with both hands open.
She addressed the teller directly, clarifying that the account held the branch’s largest private balance with full withdrawal clearance.
Walking Past the Counter
The teller stared at the monitor, his lower lip parting slightly.
The manager collected the withdrawal paperwork, smoothing the edges flat against her palm.
She extended both hands, offering the document back to the client.
The teller clasped his fingers in front of his waist, his chin dropping toward his chest as he spoke an apology.
The woman reached out, took the paper back, and tucked it into her purse.
Several bank representatives formed a straight line along the counter, their arms hanging at their sides.
The woman fastened the metal clasp on her bag, turned, and walked through the lobby toward the glass doors.
