A Sudden Trap Along The Fence Line
A chestnut foal’s lower leg wedged tight against the base of an angled wooden fence post.
The timber leaned sideways into a white horizontal rail, locking the small hoof directly against the damp ground.
Towering right behind the foal, the mother mare lowered her head and pressed her broad muzzle against the baby’s neck.
She nudged the young horse’s shoulder, shifting her weight back and forth in the wet clover.
Every time the foal tried to step backward, the wood held the ankle fast against the fence frame.
Careful Steps Across The Pasture
A white pickup truck pulled to a halt on the gravel lane running alongside the enclosure.
A woman wearing a tan canvas coat, work gloves, and a baseball cap stepped out of the cab and walked toward the fence.
She slowed her gait to a measured walk as she closed the distance, keeping her arms resting low at her sides.
The adult mare flicked both ears forward and watched the approaching rescuer without flinching or retreating.
Instead of pulling back, the mother stayed glued to the foal’s flank, breathing soft puffs of vapor into the dawn air.
The rescuer dropped to both knees directly in front of the pinched timber.
Working The Pinned Post
She extended one gloved palm, placing it flat against the colt’s shoulder before reaching toward the timber.
Thick cord was wound around the leaning post, tying it off to the perimeter fencing and eliminating any natural give.
The woman wrapped both hands around the upright cedar log and braced her boots into the mud.
She leaned her torso forward, applying steady upward force against the angled wood.
The mare dropped her chin lower, resting her chin lightly atop the woman’s cap as the post creaked.
With a controlled heave, the woman pulled the heavy post back, widening the gap between the wood and the white board.
The foal lifted its trapped leg cleanly out of the opening and planted its hoof firmly onto the clover.
Walking Back Into The Morning Light
The woman lowered the loose timber flat onto the grass and remained resting on her knees.
The young horse stood squared on all four legs, testing its weight without showing a limp.
The mother mare lowered her head once more, licking across the top of the foal’s forehead.
Standing up, the woman pushed open the white wooden gate and stepped back to clear the path.
The mare stepped forward into the open field, matching her stride to the foal walking closely against her side toward the red barn.
