A Dog Steals Water From An Injured Man Outside His Home

An Unexpected Thief On The Front Porch

George twisted the plastic cap off his cold bottle of water while sitting on his porch bench. A yellow Labrador darted forward, clamped its teeth around the plastic bottle, and sprinted away across the driveway.

George lunged forward, shouting for the dog to drop it. The retriever trotted through the wooden garden gate without slowing down.

Across the walkway, a neighbor named Ida stopped at the fence line and pointed at the running animal. She asked whose dog was running loose through the complex.

George pressed both hands onto his knees and pushed himself upward from the wooden seat. A sharp pain locked his joint, forcing him to gasp and catch his balance against the porch railing.

He recognized the retriever immediately. The dog belonged to Martha, an eighty-year-old neighbor who lived two doors down and never let her pet wander off leash.

Tracking The Clues Across The Pavement

Ida urged him to sit down and rest his bad leg, but George shook his head. He limped along the asphalt parking lot, keeping his eyes on the yellow tail ahead.

The dog paused near a line of parked cars, turned around, and looked directly back at him. As soon as George drew closer, the dog trotted forward again, keeping the clear bottle in its jaws.

George pulled his cell phone from his pocket and pressed redial on Martha’s contact name. The phone rang repeatedly against his ear until the automated voicemail system clicked on.

Ida jogged over to Martha’s apartment and pounded on the front door. After several hard knocks and loud calls, nobody answered from inside the dark residence.

George knew Martha spent every afternoon resting indoors, but the dog was now barking from the tree line bordering the community walking trail. He fetched a pair of metal crutches from his entryway and leaned his weight onto the arm pads.

A Discovery In The Tree Line

The retriever moved along the dirt path, placing the plastic bottle onto the ground and nudging it forward with its nose. George swung forward on his crutches, following the small crushed spots in the grass.

A white slip-on walking shoe lay half-buried near an exposed root beside the trail. George stopped moving, his fingers tightening against the grips of his crutches as he spotted a gray cardigan tucked against an oak trunk.

Martha was slumped against the rough bark, her skin pale and her eyes barely open. Her lips were cracked, and her fingers weakly scraped the dry soil as George dropped to one knee beside her.

He twisted open the stolen water bottle and brought the rim to her mouth. He supported the back of her neck with one palm and instructed her to take small, steady sips.

Martha swallowed the liquid, coughing softly as the water touched her dry throat. George kept his hand steady against her shoulder, pulled out his phone, and dialed emergency services, reading off their exact trail coordinates.

A Grateful Goodbye At The Ambulance

Sirens echoed between the trees as paramedics carried medical bags and an emergency stretcher down the dirt path. The lead paramedic knelt beside Martha, placing two fingers on her wrist pulse and checking her dilated pupils.

The medic prepped an intravenous line, explaining that the woman was suffering from extreme dehydration in the midday sun. She looked up at the yellow Labrador sitting quietly beside the stretcher and noted that the bottle of water had prevented complete circulatory collapse.

The medical team lifted Martha onto the wheeled cot and secured the restraining straps across her chest. Martha raised one frail hand, reaching toward the dog’s soft golden ear, whispering her gratitude before looking toward George.

George took the leash and promised to look after the dog until her family arrived from out of town. He watched as the ambulance doors closed shut and the red lights flashed against the pavement as the vehicle rolled out of the complex.

Back on his porch, George tilted a fresh bottle over a stainless-steel dish on the concrete floor, watching the dog lap up the water while resting its chin against his shoe.
