Woman Swept Away By Harsh Current Clings To Her Last Hope

The Rush of the Current

The man’s boots skidded across the wet shale as his fingers clawed at the churning edge of the river.

Foaming white water roared around a woman’s shoulders, pushing her head beneath the cresting waves.

Her hands slapped against the surface, trying to find purchase against the rushing surge that dragged her downward.

The man threw his chest over the slick rocks and thrust his arm straight into the spray.

He yelled over the roar of the water, lunging forward until his knees slipped beneath the surface.

His hand clamped around her wrist just as her fingers slid under the foam.

With his free arm wedged against an outcrop of jagged stone, he pulled his shoulders back and wrenched her toward the bank.

Her head broke the surface, coughing and drawing ragged breaths of cold air.

Grounded on the Shore

He hauled her across the slippery ledge, his knuckles turning pale against the wet stone.

Together they tumbled onto the flat rocks away from the river’s pull.

Water streamed down her pale cheeks and soaked into the mud beneath her shoulders.

Her eyelids fluttered shut, her breathing shallow as her head rested back against the stones.

The man dropped to his knees beside her, brushing wet strands of hair back from her forehead.

He lifted her cold hand between both of his palms and pressed his lips against her knuckles.

His chest rose and fell rapidly, his eyes fixed on the slow rise and fall of her chest.

Rain continued to patter across the rocky beach, dripping off his jaw as he gathered her into his arms.

A Path Through the Rain

He rose to his feet with her body cradled across his chest.

His wet clothes clung to his skin as he stepped off the river stones and pushed through the dense spruce trees.

Mud sucked at his boots with every stride along the narrow dirt path.

Her head leaned limp against his collarbone, small droplets running down the curve of her neck.

He kept his chin lifted, scanning the thick wall of dark trunks and dripping pine needles.

Through the gray mist of rain, a small wooden cabin emerged among the trees.

A soft yellow lantern light flickered steadily from behind a small glass windowpane.

Shelter and Warmth

He carried her through the doorway and laid her gently across the dry mattress.

Across the room, dry logs crackled and popped in an open stone fireplace, sending orange light against the walls.

He picked up a small cloth, folded it carefully, and blotted the wet grit from her temples.

His fingers smoothed over her forehead, wiping away the cold drops that still clung to her eyelashes.

Taking a coarse wool blanket, he drew it up over her shoulders and tucked the corners securely around her neck.

The woman’s chest lifted evenly under the heavy blanket, her face turned toward the glowing hearth as firelight danced across her closed eyes.
