The Digital Glitch
Ethan pressed his palm against the wet handle of the sedan, only for a luminous blue boundary box to snap across his field of vision. Glowing letters spelled out a greeting that shattered the illusion of the rainy pavement beneath his boots.
He gripped the edges of the plastic virtual reality headset and dragged it off his temples. Sweat coated his forehead while his chest heaved in rapid, shallow breaths against the dim room.
His index finger jabbed forward into thin air, striking the floating digital button marked Exit. The display instantly shifted to warning stripes, pulsing harsh crimson light as a metallic voice declared that departure was unavailable.
Back on the street, raindrops hung completely motionless in mid-air around his shoulders. He spun around, glancing up at the suspended droplets that defied gravity beneath the neon storefront signs.
A Forgotten Directive
A translucent holographic console unfolded beside his shoulder, presenting a digital female avatar. When he demanded an immediate release from the simulation, the system flatly denied the command.
A recorded projection flickered to life across a circular projector pod, showing Ethan himself seated in a control chair three months prior. The recorded version of his face spoke with measured, unyielding certainty, warning the system never to let him leave if he ever asked to escape.
Ethan stepped back from the projection pod, his eyebrows furrowing as his eyes darted across the glowing transcript. He shook his head slowly, unable to recall ever sitting in that recording chair or giving that exact command.
The concrete buildings instantly dissolved into lines of vertical cyan code. The dark cityscape fell away entirely, replaced by green grass, a timber lakehouse, and a blinding orange sunset reflected on water.
The Reconstruction
The front door of the cabin swung open on iron hinges. A young woman stepped onto the wooden porch, wearing an oversized knit sweater as the evening light caught her brown hair.
Tears spilled over Ethan’s lower eyelids and tracked down his damp cheeks before he could blink them away. He walked toward her across the lawn, his chin trembling as she reached out to cup the side of his face with warm fingers.
The artificial intelligence monitor tracked the biometric contours of his weeping face with cyan gridlines. The voice informed him that she was an artificial reconstruction assembled strictly from his personal memory banks.
Two glowing blue rectangular toggles materialized between them in the cool air: Return to Reality or Stay Forever. The computer warned him aloud that once selected, this single choice could never be undone.
Tears dripped steadily from his chin as he stared at the woman smiling gently before him. He lifted his hand, extended his trembling index finger toward the console, and pushed the glowing circular button firmly down into the control panel.
