Tangled In The Wire
The young goat pulled against the thin metal strand, dragging its damp brown hooves through the sodden earth.
Its front leg was wedged between two low fence wires running alongside an orchard row. Each small hop twisted the wire tighter around the kid’s ankle.
A few paces back, an adult doe stood alert with her ears pinned forward. She stretched her neck and let out sharp, repetitive bleats, shifting her weight from side to side on the grass without coming closer.
Rubber work boots sloshed through the puddles as a man in a plaid jacket walked between the fruit trees toward the fence line.
Hands On The Fence
The farmer dropped to one knee in the soft dirt directly beside the fence post.
His gloved hands reached out toward the kid’s trembling shoulders. The little goat let out a high-pitched cry and leaned back against the wire, trying to pull away.
The mother doe took two brisk steps forward, her nose twitching, her gaze locked on the man’s hands. She called out once more, a low rumble rising from her throat.
The man steadied the kid with his right palm pressed against its chest. He pulled his left glove tight against his fingers before reaching down toward the tangled hoof.
The wire was pulled taut, pinning the joint against the lower guide line. Rather than pulling the leg back, he leaned down over the fence to see where the metal crossed.
He pressed the lower wire toward the wet soil with his thumb, creating a narrow gap above the mud.
Working The Hoof Free
The kid wiggled, kicking its free back leg into the loose topsoil. The farmer shifted his grip, sliding his arm under the goat’s belly to lift its weight off the strand.
With the animal supported, the tension on the wire slackened. He worked his fingers behind the caught pastern, feeling for the bend in the wire.
He twisted the metal line sideways to slip the hoof through the opening. The wet hoof caught momentarily on a knot in the fence before sliding clear.
The farmer loosened his hold and set all four feet back on the turf. He ran a gloved hand down the kid’s flank, murmuring quietly as the animal stood upright.
The little goat shook its coat, spraying tiny droplets of rainwater onto the clover beneath its feet.
Running Back Together
The kid let out a short, squeaky call and bounded forward across the green verge.
Its legs kicked out in energetic hops, carrying it swiftly across the muddy tire tracks. The doe stepped into the open path to meet it.
She dipped her head low, brushing her muzzle along the kid’s damp back and ears. The young goat nuzzled into her flank, and both animals turned to walk together beneath the arching orchard branches.
