Pinned in the Wetland Mud
His fingers dug into the black sludge as the weight of the rotting trunk pressed into his lower leg. Thick marsh water pooled around his waist, soaking through his flannel shirt while he dragged his elbows forward across the roots.
A few yards ahead, a young white-tailed deer stood rigid among the cattails. Just beyond the reeds, dark water rippled against the chest of a massive black bear wading directly toward the fallen timber.
The trapped man twisted his neck, his shoulders trembling as he tried to pry his trapped boot free from the sunken debris. Every surge of movement only pulled him deeper into the cold mire.
An Unlikely Messenger
The young doe kicked up twin sprays of mud, bounding away from the pool and heading straight toward the tree line. Her hooves pounded the damp soil along a cleared trail leading up toward the distant homesteads.
Three men stood beside a wooden cart loaded with fence posts and coils of rope. Their conversation stopped abruptly when the deer trotted into the clearing, halting just feet from their boots and stamping her hoof against the dirt.
The tallest man adjusted his grip on a wooden pole and glanced toward the treeline. The doe wheeled around, took three deliberate leaps, and turned her head to verify they were following.
The three men grabbed their tools and broke into a fast stride behind her. They pushed through thick reeds and muddy ruts, tracking the animal’s path straight back into the swamp.
Prying Open the Trap
They burst through the tall reeds just as the trapped man gave another exhausted push against the muck. The black bear paused waist-deep in the pool, its dark head turning slowly toward the commotion.
Two of the men jammed heavy timber poles beneath the waterlogged trunk, leaning their entire body weight downward onto the makeshift levers. The third man dropped to his knees in the sludge, wrapping both arms beneath the pinned man’s shoulders.
Wood groaked under pressure as mud and brown water suctioned against the bark. The levers lifted the trunk inch by inch, releasing the vice-like grip on his leg.
With a wet slurp of displaced silt, his boot slipped free from the root pocket. His companions hauled him backward onto firmer ground before the log settled back into the mire.
Walking Away in the Sunset
The men threw his arms over their shoulders, bearing his weight as his boots dragged lightly across the grass. They guided him down the packed dirt path, putting distance between the marsh and the settling evening chill.
Behind them near the shoreline, the doe paused in the tall golden grass, her ears turned forward toward the trail. The rescued man halted on the path, resting a muddy hand over his chest as he looked at the friends flanking his side.
The sun dropped low across the horizon, casting a warm orange glow across the winding marsh channels and the small wooden cabins resting along the water’s edge.
