Mother Deer Watches As A Man Approaches Her Trapped Fawn

A Sudden Pause On The Trail

A pair of work boots stopped kicking up dust on the dirt path beside a tall wire pasture fence.

Just ahead, a tiny spotted fawn kicked its back legs against the lower metal squares, unable to pull itself free.

Its narrow ribs were pressed tight between the stiff wires, wedged only inches above the green grass.

On the other side of the boundary, a grown doe stood pinned to the earth, ears rotating forward and large dark eyes tracking every movement on the trail.

She stomped one slender front hoof against the sod, keeping her neck stretched straight toward her trapped baby.

Reaching Down To The Wire

The man took three slow steps forward, lowering his shoulders and dropping down into a low crouch right beside the fence post.

He kept his chin down and extended both hands forward with his palms turned inward.

The fawn let out a short, high-pitched squeak as his fingers brushed the soft brown hair along its flank.

Rather than pulling backward, the man rested one broad palm flat across the fawn’s back to keep the small body still.

He used his left fingers to locate where the rear legs had crossed through the wire grid.

The doe shifted her weight, stepping closer until her nose was barely two feet from the man’s bent arms.

She lowered her head, sniffing the breeze while watching the hands working through the metal mesh.

Threading The Small Body Free

The metal wire pressed firm against the fawn’s hips, holding the hind joints in an awkward twist.

The man slid his fingers beneath the fawn’s belly, lifting the weight just enough to take tension off the lower wire strand.

With a gentle backward tilt, he eased one fragile rear leg out of the bottom opening.

He held the ankle between two fingers, guiding the tiny dark hoof past the knot of wire without letting it scrape.

Once both hind legs cleared the gap, he repositioned his grip around the fawn’s chest, tucking the elbows close to its sides.

Instead of pulling the baby onto the path, he turned it around and pointed its nose toward the mother’s side of the fence.

He lifted the fawn entirely off the ground, aiming its head through an opening higher up the wire grid.

The little ears flattened back as the fawn’s shoulders slipped through the square opening into the cool clover on the opposite side.

A Gentle Reunion In The Grass

The fawn stumbled forward onto wobbly legs, shaking off the stiffness from the wire.

The doe immediately stepped over, dropping her muzzle down to press directly against the fawn’s neck.

She nudged the baby’s side with rapid, wet licks, checking its spine and flank while circling its small frame.

The fawn leaned hard against her front legs, steadying its balance in the tall pasture grass.

The man remained seated on his heels on the dirt track, resting his elbows on his knees as the doe turned toward the tree line.

With her fawn trotting closely against her hip, the two deer slipped under the low branches of the trees and disappeared into the dense green leaves.
