Trapped in the Deep End
A tiny spotted fawn paddled its legs frantically against the slick blue tiles of the swimming pool.
Its chin stayed tilted upward just above the water’s surface as ripples spread across the patio.
Pacing the wet stone edge, a mature doe shifted her weight from hoof to hoof, her large ears pinned forward.
A man dressed in a plaid shirt walked slowly across the grass, holding both palms out at waist level.
The doe stomped once, spun back, and backed up two paces without turning her head away from the water.
Reaching Into the Water
The man approached the flagstone border, keeping his steps slow and quiet.
The small fawn continued kicking its hooves against the smooth concrete wall, unable to find traction on the vertical drop.
Dropping down onto one knee, the man leaned his torso out over the pool’s edge.
The doe stood less than three feet behind his shoulder, watching his hands lower directly toward her baby.
He slid his fingers beneath the fawn’s wet chest, cupping its ribcage with both hands to bear its weight.
Water streamed from the fawn’s spotted fur in thick ribbons as he lifted the tiny animal cleanly into the air.
A Touch of Noses
The man set the fawn down gently onto the dry patio stones.
Its thin legs wobbled on the smooth rock before locking straight to find its footing.
The mother doe stepped forward instantly, lowering her snout to press her wet nose directly against the fawn’s face.
After a quick sniff, the doe pivoted toward the open backyard, breaking into a brisk trot across the manicured lawn.
The fawn followed tight behind her heels, both animals slipping through the narrow gap between the wooden fence and the garden shrubs.
Standing Guard on the Asphalt
Only moments down the road, another mother faced a different obstacle on the hot pavement.
A Canada goose stood directly across the double yellow line of a two-lane road, spreading both wings out to their full span.
Beneath the shadow of her primary feathers, a lone yellow gosling lay curled flat against the dark asphalt.
A dark SUV sat stopped just inches away, its headlights reflecting off the mother goose’s glossy black neck.
She lowered her head, nudging the chick’s back with the tip of her rounded bill while letting out soft, low calls.
The gosling kicked its yellow feet, pushed its body up, and stumbled upright onto the painted road markings.
With her wings folding back against her sides, the mother turned toward the shoulder as three more goslings scurried out from behind a parked car.
The mother goose escorted the single file line of goslings off the asphalt, down the grassy incline, and straight into the thick green bushes as traffic waited behind them.
