A Crowd Gathers Around The Smoke
Flames burst through the second-floor window frame as a man leaned over the burning sill, shouting promises of cash to anyone below.
On the asphalt street, young onlookers lifted their smartphones to record the orange glow. Laughter rippled across the sidewalk while sparks scattered into the dark sky.
An older man planted two metal crutches into the icy street and leaned his weight forward. A dark patch of blood seeped through his trouser cuff, staining the fabric near his shin.
His wife gripped his wool coat with both hands, pulling him back toward the crowd. She pointed toward the distance, telling him sirens were already sounding.
The man shook his head, adjusted his grip on the foam handles, and swung his injured leg up the porch steps.
Entering The Hallway
Thick gray smoke rolled across the ceiling boards inside the entryway. The man dropped one crutch to balance against the peeling wallpaper, coughing as heat pressed against his face.
Ahead on the floorboards, a man lay on his stomach, clawing at the wood planks and shouting that his legs would not work. The older man grabbed him firmly under the shoulders, hauling him upright against the bannister.
He shoved the man toward the downward stairs and ordered him to crawl. As the man slid downward, a limp figure appeared slumped in the shadows near a broken doorframe.
The older rescuer knelt, locked his fingers around the unconscious woman’s forearms, and dragged her body backward across the threshold. The crawling man reached up from the landing below, took her weight into his arms, and hauled her down toward the street.
A sharp wail cut through the roar of burning timber above the ceiling rafters.
The Upper Stairwell
On the upper stairs, a young mother clutched a swaddled infant against her chest, crying out for someone to reach them. Flames broke through the ceiling plaster above their heads, dropping embers across the steps.
The veteran shed his heavy woolen overcoat and draped it over the mother and child, shielding them from the falling embers. He gripped the mother’s shoulder, guiding her downward step by step beneath the thick fabric.
A blast of fire tore through the hallway behind them, shaking the staircase support beams. Red emergency lights finally painted the exterior siding as fire trucks rolled onto the block.
Firefighters rushed toward the porch just as the mother and infant emerged into the cold night air. The older man remained on the upper stairs, pushing them forward through the door frame.
A sudden roar consumed the porch roof, sending a burst of fire upward as the entrance caved inward.
Morning On The Block
By dawn, the structural frames stood charred against the pale morning sky, water dripping from blackened eaves onto the snow. A firefighter kneeled beside a damaged coat, pulling a black credential folder from an interior pocket.
He opened the leather flap under the streetlamp, revealing a brass crest and a disabled veteran card. He lifted the badge high so the quiet crowd on the sidewalk could see the name printed beneath the seal.
The man who had cried from the window walked over to the rescuer’s widow, pulling a white card from his coat pocket to offer funds for recovery. The widow gestured toward the sidewalk, where eleven neighborhood families stood wrapped in blankets without homes.
The man nodded and wrote on his clipboard, pledging shelter and care for every displaced resident on the street. Community members formed a single line along the curb, passing winter coats from hand to hand while the widow wrapped a wool blanket around the young mother’s shoulders.
