Distressed Goose Approaches Park Officer Begging For Immediate Help Nearby

A Persistent Guide On The Wooden Pier

The white goose charged forward across the wooden planks, flapping its broad wings and snapping its orange beak toward the officer’s boots.

Officer Ray paused her patrol along the lake shore, stepping sideways as the bird matched each of her movements. The large bird refused to clear the boardwalk path, extending its neck and letting out short, urgent honks before turning toward the embankment.

Each time the officer moved backward, the bird rushed ahead, spreading its feathers wide to block any return to the main walking route.

The bird turned its head back toward the grassy bank, taking three rapid waddling steps toward the waterline before turning around to see if the uniform followed.

A Hidden Dilemma Trapped In The Grass

Officer Ray walked to the edge of the timber path and glanced down into the patchy clover beside the water. Nestled flat against the dirt sat a young grey gosling, its body pressed low into the turf.

The juvenile bird could not lift its body or shift its webbed feet forward. Heavy, clear nylon line looped several times around its breast and underbelly, anchoring its feathers directly to the ground.

Officer Ray lowered herself onto both knees on the edge of the wood decking, extending one bare hand slowly toward the juvenile bird.

The mother goose remained standing less than two feet away on the grass, wings cocked outward and neck arched, watching every inch of movement.

The officer slipped her index finger beneath the first loop of line resting against the gosling’s grey down. The cord was stretched tight, biting into the plumage and locking the small wing down against its ribcage.

Freeing The Tangled Juvenile

Officer Ray reached down to her equipment belt and pulled free a small folding utility knife from its pocket pouch.

The adult goose let out another low honk and took a single step closer, its beak inches from the officer’s arm as she worked. The officer kept her elbows tucked in close, angling her body to shield the juvenile bird from any sudden shifts.

With her left hand, she worked two fingertips under the tensioned strand to create a tiny gap between the plastic wire and the bird’s tender skin. She slid the blade into the gap, turning the edge away from the bird’s chest, and pressed down firmly against the monofilament.

The thick strand parted with a sharp snap, loosening the tight grip across the gosling’s back. Two more crisscrossed loops remained wrapped tightly around the base of its left leg.

The officer guided the dull spine of the blade under the leg loop, flicking her wrist outward to sever the remaining plastic coil without grazing the downy feathers.

She gathered the severed lengths of transparent line into her palm and tucked the scraps securely into her pocket so they could not return to the grass.

Returning Together Across Open Water

The young bird pushed its feet underneath its belly, testing the soil beneath its toes before giving a sudden shake that ruffled its entire coat of feathers.

It stood completely upright on the turf, wobbling for half a second before stretching its neck tall. Officer Ray stayed on her knees, leaning back on her heels with a wide grin spread across her face.

The mother goose immediately dropped her raised wings back against her sides, letting out a soft, low cluck as the youngster scurried past the officer’s boots.

A second adult goose stepped out from behind a lakeside bush to flank the young one as the small group waddled down the bank together. Their feet splashed into the shallows, pushing ripples outward into the center of the lake.
