A Sudden Discovery On The Pavement
The white rubber toe of a sneaker stopped an inch from the dark rectangle lying flat against the concrete. Two young men halted mid-stride under the dappled shade of the sidewalk trees, their eyes fixed on the pavement.
One of them, dressed in a denim jacket with a dark backpack slung over his shoulders, bent his knees and lowered himself toward the ground. His fingers curled around the edges of the device, lifting the heavy, glass-backed phone into the afternoon light.
His friend crouched beside him in a green hoodie, gesturing with an open palm toward the sleek surface. The phone looked fresh from a store display, without a single crack across the screen.
“You could keep it,” his friend muttered, eyes flicking from the phone to the empty walkway ahead. The young man in denim shook his head softly, his gaze remaining locked on the black screen.
“No,” he answered, his tone steady as he rose back to his feet. “Someone is looking for it.”
A Face On The Lock Screen
He tapped the glass with his thumb. The display flared awake, revealing 3:24 alongside a bright wallpaper photo of a mother, an older brother, and a beaming boy standing shoulder to shoulder in the sun.
The young man held the phone close to his chest, scanning the bustling street before him. He stepped past the wooden park benches, keeping his pace measured while his eyes tracked every pedestrian in sight.
Dozens of people walked past carrying groceries, chatting on headphones, or rushing toward crosswalks without looking up. Yet a few yards ahead, someone stood out against the flow of foot traffic.
A young woman in a tan jacket was rifling through her shoulder bag with quick, frantic motions. She unzipped the compartments one after another, digging her fingers into the bottom corners and pulling back empty hands.
Her shoulders hunched as she checked the sidewalk behind her, spinning around to retrace steps she could no longer remember. The panic in her posture was unmistakable.
The Search Comes To An End
The young man slowed his walk as he approached her side. “Excuse me,” he said softly, keeping his distance so as not to startle her. “Are you looking for a phone?”
She stopped cold, looking up from her unzipped purse with wide eyes. “Yes! I just lost mine,” she breathed, her voice cracking slightly under the strain.
He lifted the dark phone from his side and turned the illuminated screen toward her. The portrait of her family lit up between them in full color.
A sharp gasp escaped her lips as her hands flew up toward her collarbone. “That’s mine!” she cried, stepping forward and reaching for the device as if she could barely believe it was still intact.
She took the phone with both hands, clutching it against her jacket while laughing in disbelief. Her shoulders relaxed completely, the visible tension dropping away from her face.
A Refusal And A Departure
Reaching deep inside her purse once more, she pulled out a fold of cash and pressed it forward toward his chest. “Please, take this,” she urged, holding the bills out between two trembling fingers.
The young man lifted his right hand, palm facing outward, and gently shook his head. “I can’t,” he replied with a soft grin. “Just keep it safe.”
She tried to press the bills into his palm a second time, but he pulled his hands back and slid them into his pockets, stepping aside to let her pass. She looked down at the money, smiled warmly, and slipped the folded bills back into her purse.
As the late afternoon sun dipped lower, casting long golden shadows along the park lawn, his companion caught up to him. “You really didn’t want the money?” his friend asked, studying his face.
“Doing the right thing is enough,” he murmured, glancing across the sidewalk where the girl stood smiling back toward them.
The young man hooked his thumbs under the straps of his tan canvas backpack, pulled them snug against his shoulders, and walked away down the golden-lit sidewalk.
