Trapped Beside The Speeding Traffic
The ginger cat scraped both front paws against the rigid plastic rim locked around its neck.
With every step through the dry roadside grass, the bulky clear jug wobbled and bumped across the ground. Sedans and delivery vans rushed past along the pavement only two feet from where the cat staggered.
The cat threw its head back, opening its mouth in a wide meow that rattled against the curved walls of the container. It twisted its shoulders, trying to back out of the funnel, but the narrow opening caught hard behind its jawline.
Footsteps broke through the grass behind the cat. A woman dropped down to a jog on the shoulder, carrying a folded green towel in one hand and orange-handled shears in the other.
A Careful Approach With Shears
The woman knelt into the weeds, keeping her knees low against the dirt to avoid spooking the animal. She spread the coarse towel wide across her palms and slid her fingers beneath the cat’s belly.
The tabby kicked its hind legs, but she folded the fabric gently over its back, wrapping the claws securely inside. With the cat held firmly against the ground, she placed one hand around the plastic cylinder to stabilize it.
She guided the blunt tip of the scissors into the rim near the neck opening. Each snip created a sharp pop as the thick plastic split open along the side.
She worked the blades along the seam, angling the cutting edge outward so the jagged margins never touched the cat’s ears. The cat pressed its nose into the towel, breathing rapidly as the split widened.
Lifting Away The Heavy Shell
With a final firm squeeze of the handles, the container separated into two distinct halves. The woman gripped both pieces and pulled them apart, sliding them smoothly off the cat’s head.
The ginger cat lifted its chin immediately, blinking into the open daylight. It turned its head left and right, flattening its whiskers as the surrounding air hit its face.
The rescuer laid a red travel crate on the grass and placed a gray ceramic dish filled with kibble onto the cloth. She pushed a small bowl of clean water forward, setting it right beneath the cat’s nose.
The feline leaned in, lapping water before bending its head down to eat the dry food without pausing.
Safe Indoors Away From The Road
Later, inside a sunlit living room, the orange tabby stretched out flat across the folded green blanket. Two filled bowls rested beside the braided floor rug near the coffee table.
The woman sat cross-legged on the floor beside the cat, running her open hand down its back from the shoulder blades to the tail.
The cat closed its eyes, pushed its chin upward into the palm of her hand, and rested its paws flat on the towel.
