The Spill on the Living Room Floor
The plastic storage tub tipped sideways, spilling dozens of vintage vinyl sleeves across the dark hardwood floor.
Cardboard jackets slid across the grain, fanning out into uneven layers around the edge of the patterned rug. The man in the grey shirt stepped back and extended an arm downward, pointing directly at the scattered mess.
“They’re just old records, Dad,” he said, his voice flat as he turned his shoulders away from the pile.
Across the room, an older man in gold-rimmed glasses drew a quick breath. His mouth fell open, and his fingers gripped the armrest of an armchair beside him.
“No,” the father said, his voice catching in his throat as he pushed himself forward. “Why?”
He shuffled toward the center of the room, his knees bending slightly as his hands hovered over the scattered cardboard. Each jacket lay flat against the boards, showing faded edges and worn paper corners from decades of handling.
A Sharp Contrast in the Dim Room
A younger woman in a tailored dark blazer walked into the frame, holding a compact grey wireless speaker in both palms. She held the small unit outward, tilting her head with a dismissive glance toward the floor.
“Oh, Dad, it’s just noise,” she remarked, resting her hands against the modern speaker case.
The older man pressed his left hand flat against the wool of his brown cardigan. Tears filled the rims of his eyes behind his lenses, pulling the skin tight across his cheeks and mouth.
He struggled to draw a complete breath, his chest rising and falling beneath his sweater as he pointed toward the floor. His chin trembled while he tried to form words, clutching at the fabric over his heart.
The son turned away from the heap and took two paces toward the leather couch, planting one foot on the cushion before sitting down. He folded his arms across his chest and looked straight ahead, avoiding his father’s eyes.
A Sudden Tap of a Button
The older man lowered his hand slowly from his chest and reached deep into his cardigan pocket. His fingers closed around a small, smooth black remote with a single circular button.
With a firm press of his thumb, the button flared red in the dim lamplight.
A mobile phone resting flat on the wooden coffee table lit up instantly. The screen displayed an incoming call notice, casting a blue hue over the dark timber surface.
The father looked directly at his son, his face settling into stillness. “Your inheritance?” he asked softly.
The younger man looked up from the cushions. His eyes darted from his father’s steady gaze down to the glowing phone on the table.
His posture shifted in an instant. He dropped off the edge of the couch, his knees striking the floor right beside the scattered albums.
Gathering the Past From the Floor
His hands moved rapidly across the floorboards, sliding under the paper edges. He scooped up the loose discs, lifting two sleeves at a time and aligning their corners against his thighs.
He placed the first stack onto the surface of the coffee table, right beside the illuminated mobile screen. His fingers smoothed down the bent paper seams, checking each cover before setting it carefully onto the pile.
Behind him, the woman remained motionless, the small speaker still resting in her palms as she watched the floor. The father stood tall in his brown cardigan, his arms resting at his sides without moving another inch.
On his knees, the son grabbed another handful of jackets, blowing dust from the vintage print before placing them gently on top of the growing stack.
