A Strip of Grey Tape
A long strip of duct tape pulled tight against white paper, pressing flat over an ornate gold frame. The woman smoothed down the silver adhesive with a steady hand, turning her head with a faint grin.
She stepped back to inspect her work, declaring that nobody would have to look at the old fixture any longer. Across the room, an older woman stopped in her tracks, her fingers gripping a ceramic coffee mug.
Her jaw dropped, her breath catching in her throat as her knuckles went pale. The mug slipped through her fingers, crashing against the hardwood floor below.
Shattered Porcelain on Oak Floors
Hot coffee splashed outward, pooling across the wood alongside jagged white shards. Her hands raised into the air, fingers trembling as tears welled in the corners of her eyes.
She pointed directly at the covered frame, her voice cracking as she pleaded that the portrait belonged to her late husband. A man stepped forward, smoothing down the tape with his palm to secure the covering firmly against the edge.
He turned toward his mother, whispering for her to keep quiet and avoid causing a scene over a simple piece of decor. The mother stared at him, tears trailing down both cheeks as she asked if he was truly taking a stand against his own family.
The younger woman smiled gently, brushing off the reaction as an overblown fuss about nothing important. The man kept his hands low, refusing to look directly at the broken ceramic scattered across the boards.
An Unfolding Document
The older woman reached into the pocket of her knitted beige cardigan without speaking another word. Her hand emerged clasping a heavy black leather folio stamped with an embossed gold emblem.
She thrust the folio outward, placing it directly into the man’s hands with a firm, unyielding grip. He peeled back the cover, scanning the printed seals and signatures laid across the formal parchment.
His eyelids widened, his lips parting slightly as color drained from his cheeks. He stared down at the crisp paper before turning back toward the wall with an altered gaze.
He told the room that the canvas underneath was an authentic, registered Van Gogh. The younger woman’s grin vanished instantly, her posture stiffening as her eyes darted between the folio and the wall.
The Face Beneath the Paper
She moved toward the frame in a swift stride, catching the taped paper by its top corner. With one swift tug, she tore the sheet clean off the golden border.
The white paper crumpled to the floor, uncovering swirling blue brushstrokes and the painted red beard of the Dutch master staring back into the room.
