The Document on the Glass Table
Ryan reached his right hand out toward the glass conference table, fingers curling inward before pulling back.
Across the sleek reflective surface, a seated executive opened a black leather folio and tapped the top sheet. He peeled back the cover sheet with two fingers and slid the paperwork forward.
“Read the first line,” the seated man said, leaning back into his high-backed chair.
Ryan tightened his jaw. His upper lip curled back, exposing his teeth as a low grimace twisted his features.
A Gripping Question
Beside him, a pregnant woman in a plum dress grabbed Ryan’s forearm with both hands.
She looked down at the paper, then peered up into his face. “Ryan, what did you sign?” she asked, her voice cracking slightly.
An older woman standing behind them remained motionless in a beige suit jacket, her arms clasped firmly behind her back.
Ryan pulled his arm free and leaned forward over the desk. He gripped the edge of the printed sheet with his left hand, lifting the white paper into the light.
The Harsh Reality Unfolds
His eyes scanned the header text printed across the top of the agreement. As the woman leaned in over his shoulder to read along, her eyes widened instantly.
She drew a sharp, audible breath and clamped her mouth open, staring directly at the black print. Her knuckles rested against Ryan’s navy suit jacket as her shoulders dropped.
The seated man crossed his fingers over the leather folder resting in his lap.
“Ryan,” the older man said, his voice flat and deliberate. “You signed away the one thing you thought you owned.”
Ryan lowered the page slightly, his eyebrows furrowing as his gaze remained fixed on the final signature block at the bottom of the page.
