An Unexpected Guide
A woolly sheep clamped her teeth onto the cuff of a cyclist’s dark trousers and pulled backward.
The rider lowered his shoe onto the dirt path and steadied the handlebars of his mountain bike. The sheep tugged firmly once more, released the fabric, and immediately broke into a trot down the narrow trail.
She swung her head back every few paces to confirm the wheels were still rolling behind her. Her raspy, urgent calls carried across the weeds flanking the track.
The cyclist pedaled steadily along the packed earth, keeping the white fleece in his sight. The route wound past tall reeds and a wide pond where willow branches brushed low against the muddy bank.
The Open Opening
The sheep maintained a brisk pace, kicking up dry dust as she steered clear of puddle edges. She ignored the open green pastures and kept her snout pointed along the brick-lined alley.
She rounded a sharp curve beside a weathered wall and abruptly dug her hooves into the dirt. She stepped toward a raised circular rim embedded in the ground and lowered her nose directly over the dark gap.
The cyclist swung his leg over the bike frame, set the kickstand into the soil, and walked toward the iron rim. A heavy manhole cover lay missing, exposing a wide concrete opening dropping down into darkness.
The mother sheep stood frozen beside the edge, bleating downward into the cool shadow. She stamped her front hoof against the sod and looked up at the rider’s face.
Reaching Into the Shadows
The man leaned his torso over the rim and looked straight down into the pipe. Two small white ears twitched in the gloom below, coated with wet soil.
A tiny lamb stood balanced on the shallow concrete base, stretching its neck upward toward the circle of daylight. Its pale fleece was streaked with gray muck, and its thin legs trembled against the slick stones.
The cyclist knelt on both knees in the dirt and pulled his sleeves back from his wrists. He reached deep into the shaft, spreading his fingers to support the animal’s chest and belly.
His hands cradled the small ribcage, gently shifting the lamb away from the muddy pipe floor. He hauled his arms backward, lifting the fragile creature smoothly up through the opening and out into the sun.
Reunited on the Dirt Path
The man brought the lamb onto the grass and eased it onto its feet beside the trail. Its spindly legs wobbled slightly before steadying on the solid ground.
The mother sheep stepped forward at once, burying her nose into the lamb’s wet neck. She worked her tongue across its face and shoulders, licking away the dark grime from the drain.
The lamb took three quick steps forward, pressing its flank directly into the thick wool of its mother’s side. Both animals trotted down the dirt track together, their tails flicking in unison as they moved past the brick cottages in the distance.
