A Sudden Cry For Help
A paper coffee cup tumbled from the man’s fingers, bursting open across the stone sidewalk as dark liquid splashed around his black leather shoes.
His eyes stayed fixed on the tinted glass of the black sedan idling beside the curb. Pressed against the rear window was a pale palm marked with red letters spelling out SOS.
Behind the glass, a young woman in a cream blouse sat weeping, her chin trembling as she stared out at the pedestrians walking past. Beside her sat an older man in a tailored suit, gripping a phone to his ear and gesturing sharply as he barked orders into the receiver.
The walking couple exchanged a brief, sharp glance. The woman in the white suit leaned in close, whispering a single word of confirmation before slipping her purse securely onto her shoulder.
A Bold Distraction On The Pavement
Stepping away from her companion, the woman in white circled around toward the front bumper of the high-end vehicle. She carried a second cup of coffee in her right hand, tilting her body just as she drew level with the polished front grille.
With a deliberate stumble, she tipped the paper cup forward, sending a dark wave of liquid washing straight across the glossy black hood and over the glass headlight casing. She gasped aloud, clapping both hands against her chest in exaggerated alarm.
Inside the cabin, the driver’s side door flew open with force. The man in the suit shoved his phone away, stomping onto the pavement with his teeth bared and a stiff finger pointed directly at her face.
He advanced on her, closing the distance while bellowing about the price of the vehicle and demanding seven figures in damages. She retreated two small paces, her shoulders hunched and her hands raised placatingly, keeping his attention locked entirely on her.
Sprint For Safety
While the car owner pressed forward in rage, the young man in black slipped around the blind side of the chassis. He yanked the rear passenger door open and reached inside, catching the crying captive firmly by the forearm.
She dropped her high heels onto the curb, kicking them aside so her bare feet hit the stone pavers without making a sound. The man pulled her into an immediate sprint, looping around the rear bumper just as the woman in white broke into a run alongside them.
The suited man turned his head and spotted the open door, his eyebrows shooting upward before settling into a furious scowl. Letting out a roar, he bolted after them down the center of the avenue, his long overcoat flapping behind his legs.
The three runners sprinted side by side down the middle of the roadway, the blonde woman looking back over her shoulder while raising her voice to call toward the end of the block.
The Final Takedown
Just fifty yards ahead, two uniformed patrol officers stood leaned against the front bumper of their cruiser, holding half-eaten pastries in wax paper. At the first shout for help, both officers dropped what they were holding and pushed off the patrol car.
The pursuing man charged blindly past the trio, ignoring the officers standing in his path. In a fraction of a second, both officers stepped forward, caught him by the shoulders, and forced his chest down hard against the asphalt.
One officer pressed a knee into the man’s lower back while the other twisted his wrists behind him, snapping steel cuffs shut over his cuffs as the suspect yelled protests into the pavement.
A few yards back, the rescued woman buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking as tears washed over her cheeks. The man in black rested a hand gently against her upper arm, offering a soft nod while she looked up to meet their eyes.
