A Sudden Fall on the Pavement
A pastry box slipped from the officer’s fingers, scattering powdered sugar across the hood of the black-and-white patrol car. His hands flew directly to his throat, his thumbs digging into his windpipe as his eyes widened.
Beside him, a man in a black beanie stood with his wrists locked in steel cuffs. He watched the older officer stagger backward, gasp for air, and collapse sideways onto the asphalt.
The fallen officer rolled onto his stomach, motionless except for a slight twitching in his shoulders. His patrol keys lay scattered on the concrete inches from his limp right hand.
The detained man dropped into a low crouch, keeping his balance on his work boots. He reached forward with both bound wrists and hooked his fingers into the keyring.
Across the street, an elderly woman stopped her cart and pulled a smartphone from her pocket. She pressed the screen to her ear, shouting frantic directions into the receiver while watching the man lean over the officer’s body.
Breaking the Chains Under Pressure
Metal scraped against metal as the man worked the small silver key into the keyhole of his left cuff. His knuckles were raw and scraped, but his fingers remained steady against the tumbler.
A sharp click broke the quiet of the residential block. The first cuff popped open, swinging free from his wrist, followed immediately by the second.
He tossed the metal chain to the street and dropped flat on both knees beside the downed patrolman. The officer’s face had turned an ashen shade of gray, lips parted around an obstructed airway.
In the distance, the sharp yowl of police sirens echoed off the storefronts. The man did not run toward the alley or duck behind the parked sedan.
Instead, he slid his arms under the officer’s armpits and hoisted the heavy torso upward into a sitting position. He braced his knees against the street to lock his own frame in place.
Facing Down Drawn Barrels
The man formed a tight fist with his right hand, tucked it just above the officer’s navel, and clamped his left hand over it. With all his weight, he pulled upward and inward against the officer’s diaphragm.
A cruiser swerved around the corner, its tires squealing against the asphalt as it skidded to a halt feet away. The driver’s door flew open, and a female officer stepped out with both hands wrapped around her drawn service weapon.
More cruisers cut across the lanes, screeching into an angled perimeter that boxed in the scene. Officers sprang from their vehicles, leveling their handguns and long guns directly at the man kneeling on the asphalt.
Voices shouted over the blare of sirens, ordering him to release the officer and hit the deck. The man tightened his grip, pulled his shoulder blades back, and delivered another sharp, upward thrust into the officer’s abdomen.
A solid piece of fried dough flew from the choking officer’s mouth, bouncing across the roadway. The officer let out a jagged gasp, air rushing back into his chest as he coughed violently.
The Clearing of the Street
The choking officer sank forward onto his hands and knees, taking deep, rattling breaths against the warm asphalt. His skin slowly regained color as his coughing fits subsided.
The man in the beanie stepped back, raised both open hands above his head, and lowered himself onto his knees before the row of drawn weapons. He kept his palms facing forward, casting a long shadow across the center line.
The revived officer pushed himself up, wiping his mouth with the back of his sleeve. He turned toward the drawn guns, raised an open palm to his fellow officers, and waved them down.
Holsters clicked shut across the street as the officers lowered their firearms. A round of applause broke out among the neighbors watching from the sidewalks.
The older officer stepped directly in front of the man who had freed himself. He reached out with both arms, pulled him into a tight embrace, and patted his shoulder while the dropped handcuffs lay untouched between their feet on the pavement.
