A Stuck Leg in the Orchard
The tiny spotted fawn kicked its back hoof against the weathered wooden planks of the trailer bed, unable to budge. Its rear leg had slipped straight down through the narrow opening of the heavy iron latch bracket mounted on the tailgate.
Just inches away, the mother doe stood with her neck stretched forward. Her large ears swiveled back and forth, and her dark eyes stayed locked onto the fawn’s tucked body.
Every few seconds, the baby let out a high, sharp bleat that echoed under the canopy of cherry trees. The mother leaned in, twitching her muzzle and licking her lips, but the cold metal held the fawn’s small hip firmly in place.
A Careful Approach
Heavy rubber work boots crunched against the tall grass as an orchard worker walked toward the trailer. Usually, a wild deer would bolt into the tree line at the sight of an approaching human.
This doe did not run. Instead, she took half a step backward, shifting her weight onto her back legs while keeping her chest squared toward the cart.
The man slowed his pace as he reached the wooden bed. He bent his knees and lowered himself down until he was at eye level with both animals.
His hands rested on his thighs for a brief second, giving the mother time to register his presence. She craned her neck, lowering her nose toward his shoulder, her nostrils flaring as she inspected him.
Working the Heavy Latch
The man reached his right hand out and took hold of the rusty iron handle. With his left palm, he gently pressed against the fawn’s spotted flank to keep the little animal from thrashing.
The metal fitting was stiff, built to secure heavy farm equipment. He curled his fingers around the latch bar, testing the give of the hinge.
He lifted the iron loop upward millimeter by millimeter, working around the delicate joint of the fawn’s hind leg. The doe stepped even closer, her jaw working as she watched his fingers maneuver across the rust-flecked steel.
The fawn let out one more brief cry and kicked out its free leg. The worker adjusted his grip, pulling the metal bracket wide enough to clear the widest part of the joint.
With a quick, gentle tilt of his wrist, he guided the trapped limb up through the gap. The tension gave way instantly, and the fawn tumbled over the side of the wooden trailer, rolling softly onto the shaded grass below.
Back Into the Trees
The man pulled his hands back, leaving space between himself and the ground. Down in the grass, the fawn scrambled onto all four wobbly legs, shaking off bits of loose dirt.
The mother doe stepped forward immediately, dipping her head to press her nose against the fawn’s neck. She nudged the baby’s shoulder once, steering it forward.
Side by side, the two animals trotted away across the green lawn, their legs moving in rhythm beneath the red cherries hanging from the branches above.
