Pinned Against The Frame
The owl flapped its left wing against the wet slate patio while its right wing remained jammed tight inside the metal seam of the glass door.
Its yellow eyes darted as its talons scraped across the slick stone, struggling for leverage against the heavy glass panel.
Two people rushed through the opening from the adjoining garden path.
The woman dropped immediately to her knees on the stone, keeping her hands low and out of striking distance of the bird’s beak.
Behind her, the man crouched low, his boots sliding slightly on the wet tile before finding grip.
He reached one hand up to grip the black frame of the door, planting his weight to prevent the panel from shifting even a fraction of an inch.
A Delicate Touch
The woman extended her fingers toward the pinned feathers, moving her hand at a deliberate, slow pace.
She told her partner to hold the door completely stationary so no additional pressure fell on the bird’s trapped joint.
The owl turned its head sharply, beak slightly parted, tracking the motion of her fingers.
She slipped two fingers between the door edge and the metal jamb, feeling along the shaft of the primary flight feathers.
There was no room to pull without tearing the delicate quill structures.
She instructed the man to ease the door open by just millimeters, guiding his hand with a soft nod.
With her left hand cupping the bird’s breast feathers, she used her right fingers to guide each feather tip out of the gap.
The bird let out a quiet hiss, its chest expanding against her palm as she worked the final secondary feathers loose from the frame.
Testing The Wings
With a gentle lift, she cradled the raptor’s body completely free of the threshold, bringing it down to chest level.
Both of the bird’s wings remained intact, folding inward against its mottled brown sides.
She lowered her hands to the ground, allowing the owl’s yellow talons to make contact with the slate patio.
She stepped back on her knees, giving the creature clear space to orient itself.
The owl stood upright on the wet flagstones, rolling its shoulders once and tilting its head sideways toward the couple.
The man and woman remained crouched side by side, hands resting on their knees, watching the bird’s breathing slow down.
The bird shifted its weight from its left talon to its right, digging into the textured stone.
It blinked its large golden irises, staring out toward the open lawn and the line of evergreen trees.
Taking Flight
The owl leaned forward, pushing hard off the patio stone with both feet.
Its broad wings snapped open, sweeping downward in a deep arc that lifted it instantly three feet above the ground.
The woman pushed herself upright with a grin, watching the bird bank left across the flower beds.
The owl glided silently past rows of yellow blossoms and pink hydrangeas, skimming inches over the manicured lawn.
The couple stood together by the glass greenhouse entrance, tracking the raptor as it circled past the timber beams.
The owl banked low over the stone pathway, its wings outspread wide as it sailed directly past the camera lens toward the distant pines.
